HYBE's Reputation in Flames After NewJeans Plagiarism Allegations Explode

On May 21, Korean netizens erupted in criticism following the response of 90s Mexican girl group Jeans to plagiarism accusations against K-Pop group NewJeans. In a brief message, Jeans appeared to support the K-Pop group amidst the controversy.

The plagiarism claims first emerged when a viral post suggested that NewJeans had copied elements from Jeans. However, fans quickly debunked the post, pointing out the lack of substantial evidence.

Despite the debunking, netizens directed their frustration towards HYBE, accusing the company of orchestrating the post as part of a smear campaign against NewJeans.

The comments were scathing:

  • "Oh no, you guys exposed yourselves, lol. Make sure you do a ritual to rinse yourself of the embarrassment, lol."
  • "LOL."
  • "This is an embarrassment, there's no other way to describe this, lol."
  • "HYBE is an embarrassment."
  • "I also like it, lol."
  • "It was a shout out."
  • "Bang Si Hyuk is so embarrassing."

Netizens also pointed out the irony of the situation:

  • "Ah, this is so funny. I'm sure they're going to fabricate something else to bring more hate, lol."
  • "NewJeans is influenced by all of the aesthetics from the Y2K era and the 90s. How can you find the original (influence)?"
  • "It's hilarious that they tried to make the claim with edited clips in the first place, lol. F*ck."
  • "LOL, TLC shouted out NewJeans and now Jeans replied that they love the fact the 90s are coming back. Now what are you going to do HYBE?"
  • "They are Lucky Jeans."
  • "Lol, this is hilarious."

Meanwhile, A controversy has erupted in the Korean entertainment industry with allegations that reporter Kim Ye-rang has been paid by HYBE to conduct a smear campaign against the girl group NewJeans.

The accusations suggest that Kim Ye-rang's reporting has been biased in favor of HYBE, featuring negative articles about NewJeans while defending Dahn World, a group suspected of ties to HYBE.

This has led to suspicions of unfair reporting and financial incentives from HYBE. Netizens have expressed outrage and distrust towards both the reporter and HYBE, questioning media ethics and the influence of powerful entertainment companies.

Additionally, NewJeans faces accusations of plagiarizing a veteran Japanese girl group for their debut music video, adding to the ongoing controversies surrounding the group.
