ILLIT Criticized for 'Playing Victim' in Show + Shindong's Advice to Group Draws Attention

Following ILLIT's appearance in JTBC's "Knowing Bros," the quintet drew mixed reactions after "playing the victim" when they received hateful comments over their skills.

On May 25, the group (Yunah, Moka, Minju, Wonhee, and Iroha) joined the entertainment program as special guests, where they enjoyed a spring picnic with the MCs at Jeongok Port and Jebudo.

During the outing, the group sat down with "Knowing Bros" hosts and talked about various topics, including their casting stories as well as their participation in the survival show, "R U Next?", which created ILLIT.

While reminiscing about their journey, the members opened up about the difficulties they met in the process, with Wonhee saying:

"I feel like I'm trying to walk on eggshells a lot. My trainee period was short (so) I made a lot of mistakes."

Minju then said:

"I am mentally weak. When I read the comments, I feel like I am falling deeply into it."

Hearing this, Moka seconded:

"I'm similar to Minju. I tend to read comments a lot. I'm not hurt by them per se, but there are times when I think of the comments when I'm on stage. I get scared."

Following this, Super Junior Heechul comforted his juniors.

"I hope you put more meaning into the compliments and supportive comments you are getting. If you lose there, you lose.”

Shindong added:

"What you can do now is take revenge with your skills. All you have to do is practice hard and show that you are good at it. So that they can’t criticize you.”

When this certain part circulated on the internet, K-pop stans were irked by the group's attitude and accused them of "playing the victim."

Netters then mocked them for having "poor idol skills," hoping that they would take Shindong's advice to "practice hard" as a positive criticism and not as an insult.

Here are some of the comments:

  • "Is this a 'Knowing Bros'-style scam? Taking revenge with skills? You can't take your revenge if you don't have skills, haha."
  • "The 'skills' didn't even exist in the first place."
  • "Playing victims again. The more they become like this, the more I'm hating them."
  • "Are you guys on a healing camp?"
  • "If you guys do this, it will only cause you more resentment."
  • "If you improve your skills, don't you think the hate comments will also decrease?"
  • "It's been a month since you haven't been active in the first place, so I don't think it's worth appearing on a variety show during NewJeans' comeback and doing 'piko' (cosplaying as victims)."
  • "I don't really like Shindong, but Shindong is right. It's right to use your skills to put people to rest. But the problem is that you don't have the skills to take revenge, haha."
  • "Stop this victim cosplaying."
