In an online community, NewJeans Minji became a hot topic after a netizen expressed they were shocked to see the idol's tan skin.
The "How Sweet" singer drew attention among K-pop fans after an OP posted her photo with the caption:
"She looks completely bare-faced, but I didn't know she was this tan."
In the photo, Minji can be seen coming out of their company's car without makeup. As of its upload, the article amassed over 127k views.
From the tone of the OP, netizens speculated that it seemed like they were trying to mock the young idol for her skin color, attempting to start a hate train.
However, this alleged intention failed when Bunnies (NewJeans fandom) came to the rescue, and even non-fans defended the idol.
Looking at the photo, they were impressed by Minji's top-notch beauty even without makeup and claimed that they actually loved her tan skin which made her even more beautiful and charming.
- "But isn't that Minji's charm? Wasn't that kind of feeling a selling point? Contrary to her innocent features, she is athletic and sporty."
- "She's so pretty and cool."
- "I like her because she has a tan skin. It's not that tan, but I prefer it because it gives a deeper atmosphere. It actually suits her and when the light hits her skin, it's nice because I can see various sides of her without her tan skin being so noticeable."
- "She has an innocent visual and sexy skin tone just like Seolhyun (AOA)."
- "I like Minji's tan skin. She's a typical Korean beauty, but only her skin is a little bit darker compared to typical aesthetic standards, so she has that unique vibe."
- "Stop criticizing her skin color."
This is surprising coming from Koreans since usually, they usually made fun of idols with darker or tan skin among K-pop idols. Looking at the Korean traditional beauty standard, they also have fair skin as one of the criteria.
But seeing that the majority of the comments were positive explained how vast Minji's influence and popularity is in South Korea as a member of the 4th-gen leader group NewJeans who also stands as one of the most beautiful idols.
Meanwhile, NewJeans, the group to which Minji belongs continues to enjoy solid popularity on major domestic music charts.
Its recent EP "How Sweet" comprising double single tracks, "How Sweet" and "Bubble Gum" is consistently loved by domestic fans, ranking second and third among major Korean music fans including on MelOn, Bugs, and Flo. The group is also dominating the US Billboard.
On June 21, NewJeans will then strengthen its presence in the Japanese market by unveiling its Japan debut single, "Supernatural."
Ahead of its official release, the quintet will pre-release the MV of its track, "Right Now" on June 17th.
They will also hold a fan meeting at Tokyo Dome on June 26th and 27th, creating a historical record for an overseas artist to enter the prominent venue in the shortest period of time (1 year and 11 months) since their debut.
Even though it was an event held on a weekday, New Jeans' Tokyo Dome fan meeting was already sold out.
