NewJeans' '2D1N' Guesting Causes the Show's Lowest Rating Ever: 'They're Cute But Not Funny at All'

Despite the high anticipation for NewJeans' "2D1N" guesting, the show scored the lowest ratings in history.

What could be the reason?

On June 9, NewJeans made their appearance in the popular KBS 2TV television entertainment show, "2 Days & 1 Night" (2D1N), with the cast members transforming into an idol group to compete with a real K-pop girl group.

Ahead of its airing, it particularly attracted attention as this would be the K-pop act's first terrestrial entertainment show since debut.

They also ignited anticipation as to whether they would be able to break a new record for the show's viewership rating, considering that 2D1N is a famous TV show since 2007 for all ages in South Korea.

In the episode, the main cast members are Kim Jong Min, Yeon Jung Hoon, Moon Se Yoon, DinDin, Na In Woo, and Yoo Seon Ho. The focus of the program is to feature various places in the country, trying their food and culture.

To spice up the show, they complete missions and challenges to avoid penalties and punishment during their mealtime.

Occasionally, they invite guests to join them, and most of the time, idols are the ones who would raise the ratings.

Following NewJeans guesting then, the current K-pop leader would create a new record for 2D1N, but, shockingly, it is a "humiliating" one.

In the 17-year history of the show, the girl group's episode hit an all-time low of 6.1%, which is 1% lower from its previous week.

The show hasn't surpassed a 10% rating in a year and its avid viewers expected that the girl group would do that miracle for them, but it didn't happen at all.

When this was reported, K-pop fans immediately conveyed their thoughts and speculated some reasons about the unanticipated result.

First on the list was due to the people's divided opinions regarding its agency, ADOR, which had a conflict with HYBE.

Recently, Min Hee Jin fought back against its parent label after the latter forced her to resign as CEO over an alleged attempt to take ADOR's full management rights.

The second reason could be because most of the viewers were rather watching its competitor program, "Running Man," featuring the popular Korean football player, Hwang Hee Chan.

Considering that nowadays, the majority of those who watch TV are older people, they would prefer an athlete over an idol group.

Lastly, some suggested that the problem was probably the group itself, who were said to be "unfunny" and "boring" in the program.

In the past, idols brightened up an entertainment show with their unexpected and funny side, but some who watched the show think that NewJeans were really just"no fun."

Here are some of the comments:

  • "They're cute, but not funny at all."
  • "Normally, 2 Days & 1 Night weren't funny with guests, but they are better when they are just fighting with each other."
  • "Because 'Running Man' was funnier."
  • "It was so boring.''
  • "It's because it wasn't funny."
