BLACKPINK Lisa Accused of Plagiarizing Travis Scott's MV For 'ROCKSTAR' By Famous Director

BLACKPINK Lisa is being accused of plagiarizing a scene from Travis Scott's music video for "ROCKSTAR" by the director of the male rapper's video.

Following her successful solo debut three years ago with hits like "LALISA" and "MONEY," Lisa has made a splash with her new English single "ROCKSTAR." Her latest release showcases her effort to transcend her K-pop image and gain global recognition. However, "ROCKSTAR" has sparked significant debate and controversy since its drop.

Lisa’s venture into the American market has been riddled with challenges, starting with her concept photos, which drew accusations of cultural appropriation due to her decision to tan her skin. Additionally, her lyrics have been slammed for being shallow and awkward.

Now, Lisa has found herself embroiled in a plagiarism scandal.

The controversy was caused by a scene in her music video featuring Lisa with 100 look-alike dancers dressed in white. It was soon pointed out that this particular scene was mirroring the aesthetics of Travis Scott's "FE!N" music video, which was released on March 31, 2024. This is notably three months before Lisa released "ROCKSTAR."

This similarities have fueled allegations of Lisa copying Travis Scott's work, with word quickly spreading on social media.

On July 4, Gabriel Moses, the director of Scott’s "FE!N" music video, took to Instagram to address the plagiarism claims. He posted comparative shots of both music videos and shared a screenshot of an email complaint about Lisa's video, criticizing the inclusion of black culture themes in her work in a rather negative tone.

While Lisa's fans have fiercely defended her, arguing that the concept is not unique to hip-hop music videos and cannot definitively be considered plagiarism, the general public does not seem to agree.

A closer look reveals that Lisa's video and Scott’s music video share numerous similarities, including the arrangement of the dancers and the aesthetic, with both videos predominantly featuring white backgrounds and a focus on Asian dancers. These similarities are hard to overlook and suggest possible plagiarism.

The response from the American creative community, which often takes intellectual property issues seriously, implies potential legal issues for Lisa if the accusations escalate. Gabriel Moses' comments have brought more attention to the situation, with the hip-hop community on social media echoing his criticisms.

As of writing, Lisa's agency LLOUD has not responded to the allegations.
