To celebrate their latest release, "Sweetie But Saltie," and the lead single, "Poongdung," KpopStarz had the chance to sit down with cignature for an exclusive interview.

On June 10, 2024, cignature released the EP "Sweetie But Saltie," which features the bright and vibrant single "Poongdung." We spoke with the group members Chaesol, Jeewon, Seline, Chloe, Semi, and Dohee to discuss their comeback and some TMIs!

1. Congratulations on your comeback with album Sweetie But Saltie and title track “Poongdung!” Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the album and its concept? 새 앨범 Sweeite but Saltie, 타이틀곡 “풍덩”으로 컴백하셨습니다. 축하드립니다! 이번 앨범과 컨셉은 어디에서 영감을 받았는지 말씀해주시겠어요?

도희: 감사합니다! 아무래도 여름에 컴백을 하기위해 계절에 맞춰서 리스너 분들에게 시원한 느낌을 드리려고 노력했습니다. 여름하면 딱 생각나는게 시원한 물과 관련된 거라 여름, 물, 청량 이런 키워드에서 영감을 받았어요.
 DOHEE: Thank you for congratulating us! Since we’re coming back in summer, we aimed to deliver a cool, refreshing vibe fitting for the season to all listeners. Themes related to water came to our minds when thinking of summer, so we were heavily inspired by keywords like summer, water, and cool.

2. You guys debuted way back on February 4, 2020. How much has cignature evolved in their music and style? Do you have any other concepts in mind that you would like to try in the future? 여러분은 2020년 2월 4일 데뷔하셨는데요, 그동안 음악, 스타일 방면에서 그룹이 얼마나 성장했다고 생각하시나요? 미래에 도전해보고 싶은 컨셉은 무엇인가요?

세미: 데뷔 때에는 강렬한 보컬 사운드의 음악을 했으나 지금은 부드럽고 달콤한 음악을 하며 여러가지 스타일을 다 저희 것으로 만들 수 있도록 성장했습니다. 앞으로도 도전해보지 않은, 더 다양한 컨셉들을 계속해서 해보고 싶습니다.
 SEMI: We focused on powerful vocal sound when we first debuted, but I think we have grown a lot by trying various sounds, such as more mellow and sweet music, and proving cignature as a group that can absorb any style into our own. We’d like to continue trying new and different concepts in the future.

 채솔: 미래에는 어쿠스틱한 장르나 발라드에도 도전하고 싶어요. 잔잔한 곡과 컨셉도 잘 소화할 수 있을 것 같거든요! 4년동안 다양한 컨셉을 소화하는 것으로 성장을 해왔기 때문에 도전할때마다 더 발전한 모습을 보여드리고 싶습니다.
 CHAESOL: I hope to try an acoustic genre or ballad in the future because I believe we can pull off a more calm song or concept. We have grown by challenging ourselves with many concepts for four years, and we want to present an even better version of cignature with every challenge we take.

3. Since cignature members are busy in their promotions, how do you maintain balance between your personal lives and careers as idols? 바쁜 스케줄을 소화하는 동안 아이돌로서의 커리어와 개인적인 삶 사이에서 어떻게 균형을 유지하시나요?

셀린: 저는 굳이 아이돌과 개인적은 삶을 나눠 놓지는 않지만, 일할때는 열심히 일 하고 쉴때는 푹 쉬는게 스스로를 돌아보는 데에 큰 도움이 되는 것 같습니다. 삶의 질도 높아지구요!
 SELINE: I don’t necessarily set a line between idol life and personal life, but I found focusing on work and taking a full break when necessary helpful to reflect on myself. It also helps bring up the overall quality of life!

 클로이: 아이돌로서 활동기에는 너무 바쁘다보니 잠이 많이 부족한데요. 대기시간에 수면을 한다던가 비타민을 챙겨먹으면서 건강을 챙기고 있습니다. 체력이 좋은편이 아닌 것 같아서 이번 활동이 끝나면 체력을 기르기 위해 열심히 운동을 해야할 거 같다는 생각이 들었어요!
 CHLOE: As an idol, I lack a lot of sleep time when we’re active and promoting busily. During that time, I would take a nap during short breaks or eat vitamins to watch out for my health. I found myself quite weak physically, so I think I need to work out more after this promotion to boost my health!

4. How do cignature members handle the pressure and expectations? 사람들의 기대감으로부터 부담이 느껴질 때, 여러분은 어떻게 그 부담감을 해소하는 편이신가요?

지원: 저는 더 많이 연습하거나 사전준비를 하고있어요. 부담감을 잘 느끼는 편이다 보니 그만큼 노력으로 채우기위해서요!
 JEEWON: I just practice more or prepare ahead of time. I would feel pressured a bit easily, so I try to cover that by working even harder!

 도희: 기대를 해주신다는거 자체가 감사한 일이다보니 최대한 부담감을 느끼지 않고 좋은 모습을 보여드리기 위해 노력하는거 같습니다. 준비한 것의 100%를 발휘하기 위해서는 먼저 완벽하게 준비해야 하잖아요. 그래서 지금도 퍼포먼스나 가창 연습을 열심히 하게 되는 것 같아요.
 DOHEE: I am actually grateful for expectations, so I try my best to present my best self without feeling pressured as much as possible. You need to be perfectly prepared in order to show your full potential, so I always work hard to improve my vocal skills or performance.

5. Do you guys have any role models who inspired you to become musicians? 여러분이 가수가 되고 싶다고 생각한 계기를 준 롤모델 아티스트가 있나요?

세미: 많은 카메라와 관중이 있어도 자신감 있는 표정으로 나오시는 이효리 선배님을 보고 ‘나도 저렇게 멋있는 아티스트가 되어야지’ 라고 꿈을 키웠고, 그때부터 이효리 선배님을 계속 보며 연구를 했었어요. 지금도 정말 존경하고 있습니다!
 SEMI: I watched Lee Hyori performing with a lot of confidence in front of many cameras and audiences, and was inspired to become an amazing artist like her. Since then, I learned a lot from watching her performances and videos. I still look up to her!

 셀린: 저는 어렸을때부터 가수가 꿈은 아니었는데도 TV에 나오는 가수들을 동경했었어요. 그 시작이 소녀시대 선배님이었던 것 같습니다.
 SELINE: I admired singers on TV even though my initial dream was not to become a singer when I was young. I think my initial inspiration was from watching Girls’ Generation.

6. The choreography for “Poongdung” looks vibrant and energetic! Is the “Poongdung” choreography your favorite dance out of all your comebacks? Or are there any other choreographies in your previous songs that you particularly love dancing more? “풍덩" 안무는 정말 밝고 활기찬데요, 지금까지 활동한 모든 곡들의 안무 중 이번 안무가 가장 마음에 드시나요? 아니면 개인적으로 다른 활동곡의 안무가 더 마음에 드시나요?

지원: 저는 ‘아리송’ 안무를 굉장히 좋아하는데요! 파워풀하고 특이한데 귀엽기도해서 춤을 출 때 재미있고, 보시는 분들께도 확 꽂히는 것 같아서 좋아합니다! ‘풍덩’은 멤버들과 페어 안무가 많아서 이전과는 다른 느낌이라서 좋아하고요!
 JEEWON: I love the choreography for “ARISONG” because it’s powerful, unique, and cute. I have a lot of fun dancing to the song and I think it leaves an instant impression on the viewers! I also like “Poongdung” because it has many pair choreography which presents a new vibe from our previous performances.

 클로이: 저는 개인적으로 ‘풍덩’ 안무가 너무 좋은데요! 재미있는 페어 안무와 새로 도전해보는 대형도 마음에 들어요. 다른 활동곡은 보이프렌드 안무도 좋아합니다.
 CHLOE: I personally like “Poongdung” choreography with its fun pair choreography and new formations we’ve never tried before. I also like the choreography for “Boyfriend.”

7. Are there any funny or memorable moments you would like to share during the production of the Sweeite but Saltie album? 이번 앨범 작업과정 중 있었던 재미있는 비하인드 스토리가 있다면 공유해주세요.

세미: 풍덩 녹음 때 다같이 풍덩~! 파트를 떼창하는 부분이 있었는데 그때 멤버들과 함께 장난치고 웃으며 즐겁게 녹음했습니다.
 SEMI: There was a part where all the members sang in unison in “Poongdung,” and we had so much fun by joking around and laughing together.

 도희: 앨범 수록 곡 중 ‘I like I like’라는 곡이 있는데 도입부에 영어로 대화하는 부분의 발음을 클로이 언니가 많이 도와줬던게 제일 기억에 남습니다.
 DOHEE: When recording our B-side track “I like I like,” CHLOE helped us a lot with the pronunciation of the English intro part. It’s the most memorable moment for me.

8. Which songs on the Sweeite but Saltie album are your favorites? Which tracks would you like to recommend to signfans? 이번 앨범 중 여러분의 최애곡은 무엇인가요? 싸인팬에게 특히 추천하고 싶은 곡은 무엇인가요?

채솔: 저는 ‘I like I like’을 추천하고 싶어요! 영어 버전도 있고 편하게 듣기 좋은 곡이랍니다.
 CHAESOL: I would like to recommend “I like I like”! There is an English version of the song as well, and it’s very easy to listen to.

 지원: 저는 ‘멜로디’인데, 저희 이야기를 가사로 풀어서인지 마음에 와닿고 듣기 좋아서 추천하고 싶습니다.
 JEEWON: “Melody” tells our own story through lyrics, so it’s very touching and comfortable to listen to. Highly recommended!

9. Your new title track "Poongdung" really emits summer vibes! How do you all spend your summer days? 또 “풍덩"은 여름 분위기가 물씬 풍기는 곡인데요, 여러분은 여름을 어떻게 보내는 걸 좋아하시나요? 특별히 즐기는 여름 액티비티가 있나요?

채솔: 저는 수영을 좋아합니다!! 시원한 곳에서 보내는 여름을 좋아하다 보니 활동적인 액티비티를 많이 즐겨하지는 않았었지만, 하나 골라보자면 수영을 좋아합니다!
 CHAESOL: I like swimming! I prefer spending summer in a cool place so I don’t necessarily enjoy extreme activities, but if I choose one, my favorite activity would be swimming.

 셀린: 저는 여름에 주기적으로 바다나 계곡같이 물이 있는 곳에 가족과 놀러가서 시간을 보내는 걸 제일 좋아합니다.
 SELINE: I love spending time with my family at the beach or valley, somewhere with water, in summer.

10. Lastly, do you have any messages for your endearing signfans? 마지막으로 싸인팬들을 위한 메세지 한 마디 부탁드려요.

클로이: 사랑하는 싸인팬 이번 여름도 이렇게 시그니처랑 함께 보내고 계시는데 어떠신가요? 저희가 여러분의 여름을 조금이라도 시원하게 만들어드리고 있나요? 저는 싸인팬과 너무너무 즐거운 여름을 보내서 행복해요. 앞으로도 더 다양한 모습으로 자주 볼수있도록 노력하겠습니다 사랑해요!!

 CHLOE: Our dear signfans, how are you enjoying this summer with cignature? Are we cooling you down at least a little bit? I’m very happy to spend such a fun summer with you all. We’ll work hard to meet you more often with various charms. Love you all!
