This second-generation K-pop idol has not been active in years, but fans eagerly await her return to the music industry.
In 2009, SM Entertainment debuted the girl group f(x), which immediately became a household name in South Korea. Known as "the most unique group in K-pop" f(x) showcased its capabilities with a line-up of five talented members. During their peak, f(x) stunned with unique concepts, with highly praised music and choreography.
Among the members, the two youngest, Sulli and Krystal, became visual icons of their generation. When discussing the idol most fans miss seeing promote, the most common answer is Krystal.
Krystal debuted with f(x) at the age of 14, making her the youngest member of the group. With her stunning visuals, she quickly rose to fame in K-pop. What impressed people most about Krystal was her chic, and cold aura. During her time at SM Entertainment, Krystal was considered a "K-pop muse" and was greatly admired by the famous creative director Min Hee Jin.
Krystal wasn't just beautiful; she was also extremely talented. As the younger sister of Jessica, the former main vocalist of Girls' Generation, Krystal inherited her sister's talent for singing. She was considered the epitome of an all-rounder idol. With strong singing, dancing, and stage presence, Krystal's career as a K-pop idol seemed to be poised for success.
Despite her immense potential, Krystal's career faced significant challenges, mainly due to management decisions by SM Entertainment. f(x) was a group brimming with talent but plagued by bad luck. After Sulli's departure in 2014, f(x) only had one comeback as four members with "4 Walls" before being placed on a hiatus before their contracts expired. During the four years f(x) was inactive, from 2015 to 2019, the members focused on solo activities.
Krystal decided to step away from the music industry. During her last promotion with "4 Walls," Krystal was only 22 years old. Nine years have since passed, and Krystal has not returned to her idol roots. She shifted her focus to acting and other solo work, though fans continue to miss her idol days.
Stopping her career as an idol at just 22 years old has only strengthened fans' longing for her return. Krystal is considered a legend in the idol world, with a stage presence that captivates audiences. Earlier this year, Krystal excited fans by hinting at a potential return to the music industry. She signed a contract with BANA and released a cover of "I'm Coming Back." She also updated her profile picture on her music profile.
Krystal is expected to be promoted as a solo artist soon. BANA, her current company, was founded by Kim Kihyun, who previously worked in SM Entertainment's international artist search and management department. Kim Kihyun is a close friend of Min Hee Jin, and two of the main producers for NewJeans, 250 and FRNK, are under BANA.
