TWICE Tzuyu's Solo Debut Receives Mixed Reactions: 'She Doesn't Have The Charisma'

Tzuyu had ONCEs overjoyed due to her solo debut announcement. While many were ecstatic over her exciting endeavor, some netizens sparked a debate if the idol's star power, charisma, and performance skills would be enough to fuel a solo career.

On August 1, JYP Entertainment uploaded the opening trailer for Tzuyu's "abouTZU," which is the youngest TWICE member's first mini album and solo debut release. The trailer quickly went viral across online communities, highlighting the significant anticipation among ONCEs.

TWICE has been together since their debut in 2015. During their journey towards becoming one of the most prominent names in K-pop, each of the members has shined in their own way. TWICE has also debuted Nayeon and Jihyo in their solos, alongside Mina, Sana, and Momo for the group's first-ever sub-unit.

Fans were surprised by Tzuyu's solo album announcement since most didn't expect that she would be the next member after Jihyo to become a soloist.

According to the trailer, the youngest member was shown flaunting her elegant visuals, poised demeanor, and even showcased a parody of her archery moment from ISAC, which went viral in 2019

ONCEs expressed happiness over the TWICE member's upcoming content. The video quickly trended across online communities and social media, where netizens conveyed their enthusiasm for Tzuyu's much-awaited solo.

  • "Finally, Tzuyu's solo debut and first mini album! I'm so happy for her. Can't wait for this."
  • "Tzuyu totally deserves this recognition. She is truly the most naturally beautiful K-pop idol I've seen."
  • "I must have watched this trailer about 50 times in tears, Tzuyu's debut will finally happen!"
  • "I teared up. So proud and beyond happy for our Tzuyu! I cannot wait for this.
  • "The video was so pretty. Tzuyu's legendary archery parody is even there."

However, in a separate thread, some netizens questioned JYP Entertainment's selection of Tzuyu as the next TWICE member to have a solo career. They speculated the reasons behind the selection, while others doubted the idol's charisma.

  • "She doesn't have the talent nor the charisma for a solo. Whose idea was this?"
  • "For an idol who's close in her 10th year, she's still so awkward. A lot of JYP artists have this issue tbh."
  • "Wouldn't have been my first pick but sure."
  • "She is really pretty but I don't see any solo material from her. She is below average in singing and lacks stage presence, not to mention she always had that blank expression."

One netizen shared:

"I found this odd at first? Although there's the MiSaMo unit, surely Sana or Mina would deserve a solo album before Tzuyu, and they could make a sub-unit with Tzuyu Momo and Chae or Dahyun.

But from what Tzuyu's family have been saying, I guess JYP scrambled to give her a solo gig, because from her fam it sounded like she was unlikely to re-sign when the next contract negotiations come up in a year or two."
