In an online community, Jeon Soyeon's recent solo performance sparked a debate after she made THIS joke. As a result, Cube unveiled its explanation.
On August 3, (G)I-DLE held its third world tour, "iDOL" in Seoul at KSPO Dome in Songpa-gu. The concert venue was filled with cheers as the group performed their hit tracks, but the crowd's shouts intensified as the five members also showcased their solo stages.
Among the members, Jeon Soyeon's individual stage drew massive attention as she performed, "Is this bad b****** number?" a track from her solo mini-album, "Windy" in 2021. Wearing a leopard-print 'fit, she had an outfit change and wore a street fashion to match the song.
Unlike its original lyrics, she also changed it and presented the song in her own style, using straightforward lyrics such as, "Please, don't be tone-deaf, if you're a singer, grab the mic," "I don't care about what others think when I say XX."
She also added the line, "Fxck, my contract ends in November," No one can stop me," and "Who dares say anything."
What confused audiences especially Nevies (fandom) the most was the line about her contract expiration as tracking down her debut which was in May 2018, she still has until next year to discuss the contract renewal.
As a result, her performance drew mixed reactions, with international spectators lauding Soyeon for her cool and honest stage.
But on the flip side, Korean fans were unhappy, since the talk of contract expiration is a sensitive issue. Often, a member not renewing their contract led to either re-organization of the group, or worse, disbandment.
With this, some are giving Soyeon a side eye for bringing the topic to a space where fans who love (G)I-DLE gathered together, leaving Nevies shocked and thinking about it throughout the event.
- "I was shocked."
- "That was all I could think about during the concert."
Regarding this, Soyeon explained that it was only a joke and attested to fans:
"I wrote the rap lyrics as a joke. I want to be with the members for a long time."
As the situation didn't cool down despite her statement, Cube Entertainment has to release its official position, saying:
- "All members are due to renew their contracts next year, and Jeon So-yeon's claim to renew her contract in the second half of this year is just part of the lyric performance."
Regardless of this statement, fans want Soyeon to be mindful and sensitive about her future "joke," especially that one wrong move and that could lead them to unnecessary issues.
Following their Seoul concert, (G)I-DLE will meet global fans by holding "iDOL" concerts in a total of 14 cities around the world, including Hong Kong, Tokyo, Tacoma, Auckland, Anaheim, Houston, Rosemont, Belmont Park, Taipei, Bangkok, Macau, Melbourne, and Sydney.
