Jessica Jung's 17th Debut Anniversary Banners Frustrate SNSD Fans — Here's Why

Following Girls' Generation's celebration of its 17th debut anniversary, the status of Jessica Jung, its former member attracted attention.

On August 5, "Nation's Girl Group" SNSD took to SNS to share their commemorative full group shot on their 17th debut anniversary.

In particular, Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Tiffany, Sooyoung, Yuri, YoonA, and Seohyun reunited as a team to celebrate Tiffany's birthday on August 1, and at the same time, wish them well on their 17th year together in the K-pop scene.

Unfortunately, Sunny wasn't able to attend the gathering as she's currently in the U.S. Still, she expressed her gratefulness to their maknae Seohyun who photoshopped her image to their group photo.

Seeing that the eight members maintained a strong and close relationship with each other despite being under different labels, netizens wonder about the status of Jessica Jung, its former ninth member.

Jessica debuted with SNSD in 2007 as one of its main vocalists, but in 2014, she left the team. At the time, SM announced that the reason was to focus on her fashion brand, BLANC & ECLARE, but the idol refuted it and claimed that she was rather kicked out.

Thus, even though she left a decade ago, there are still fans who recognize her contribution to SNSD and remind younger fans that she was once a member of the team.

As a result, her Chinese supporters held an event to commemorate her supposed 17th debut anniversary by posting congratulatory flags and banners installed in front of the SM building in Seongdong-gu, Seoul. A drone fireworks was also held in Han River.

However, Korean SONEs (fandom) weren't impressed by this move and raised their brows about the intention of posting Jessica's banners in front of SM, when she was no longer an artist under the agency.

Netizens who came across this could not hide their bewilderment and shock, reacting with comments such as:

  • "Hasn't it been a while since she wasn't in SM?"
  • "Why is this in front of her former company?"
  • "She's not Girls' Generation anymore, please let her go"
  • "The fans are selfish too"
  • "I'm tired of both sides of this fight"
  • "Why in front of the SM building?"

K-pop fans particularly showed discomfort with the extravagant "debut celebration show." The main reason is that Jessica Jung had already left Girls' Generation in 2014 and ended her relationship with SM Entertainment, thus, they are asking why was it necessary to hold an event in front of the company building.

Meanwhile, after leaving SNSD and SM, Jung moved back to the US for a while and went to China to pursue her career as an idol & actress under Coridel Entertainment. In November last year, she unveiled her fourth mini-album, "BEEP BEEP" and promoted it around Asia excluding Korea, after being "blacklisted" from music shows and national television.
