Taeyeon Reveals Secret to Girls' Generation's Longevity: 'You Have to Fight...'
After celebrating SNSD's 17th debut anniversary, Taeyeon reveals how the group maintains their relationship for almost two decades.
On August 18, Girls' Generation's leader and soloist Taeyeon appeared as a special guest in the recent video of "MMTG - Civilization Express," uploaded on its official YouTube channel.
The K-pop icon joined them as a one-day mentor, ahead of the preparation of the MMTG's trio idol project consisting of MC JaeJae, dancer-choreographer Gabee, and content creator SeungHyun.
As one of K-pop's top vocalists, Taeyeon was invited to evaluate the three who should be the lead vocalist. While talking about the process of preparing songs for the album, she gave them an advice.
"First, I spread out the songs, collect and just select the songs that suit my concept. I trust my intuition, but I also listen to the staff's suggestions and opinions."
She continued:
"Some people say that with this much experience, I should express my opinions strongly, but I'm very cooperative. So I rely on my staff a lot. That’s the secret to my longevity."
To pick the position of the main vocalist, the icon then let the trio perform a song one by one, and gave her opinions for each of them.
Taeyeon ended up choosing Gabee, but she comforted the trio by saying:
"I don't think there's a right answer for a singer. It's different for everyone. What sounds good to my ears might not sound good to someone else. Just be sincere."

After the evaluation, JaeJae then continued to ask for advice from Taeyeon, especially regarding the conflicts that may arise while in a team.
"Do you think there will be a discord between the three of us? Some people were worried that the three of us might have conflicts. They all said that we'd fight over who would be the center."
Hearing this, Taeyeon, who was in a team who maintained a close friendship for 17 years shared the group's secret to longevity, saying:
"You have to fight and tease each other like that to become close. You'd be better off fighting once. We (Girls' Generation) (often) get together and talk openly about (their concerns). You have to express them unconditionally without feeling embarrassed. It's important to be always honest and acknowledge them. That's all you need."
When asked what does she when she wants to run away, Taeyeon drew laughter when she replied:
"I want to run away, but I held back because I have contractual obligations."
