Amal And George Clooney Meet With Syrian Refugees After Crisis’ Fifth Anniversary

Amal and George Clooney met up with some Syrian refugees to mark the fifth year of the crisis.

The Independent reported that the high-profile couple had a meeting with Syrian refugees residing in Berlin. This comes after the fifth anniversary of the conflict in Syria which has caused millions of people to flee the country.

Amal and George Clooney have been persistent in urging Western governments to help with the crisis. Last month, YHM reported that the couple discussed the issue with German chancellor Angela Merkel.

They talked about Europe's greatest refugee crisis since World War II. The German chancellery shared a photo of the meeting. Former British foreign secretary, David Miliband, who is now the head of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), also joined the discussion.

The refugees described their ordeal and the reason why they left their country. One man revealed that he was detained as a political prisoner and was tortured with electricity. Other refugees detailed how they and their kids were able to dodge bullets.

"My own family is from Lebanon," Amal Clooney shared. "They also ran away from a war and was lucky enough to be accepted by a European country in 1982 when the violence there was really bad. Many years later, my family is doing well."

George Clooney also shared how his family, who were Irish descendants, were treated terribly when they migrated in the U.S. "Irish were treated terribly in America for a period of time and not accepted, and America learned to accept all of these ideas," he said.

"It's what our country is, a country of immigrants."

According to Telegraph, former labor MP David Miliband asked the actor what he had gained from the meeting.

"It's too much to talk about giant numbers, it's actually easy to dismiss giant numbers," Clooney admitted.

"But it's very hard to dismiss a young child sitting on the ground crying when her mother is telling the story about how she left, how she grabbed her daughter and sat on the ground and said, 'If I die, I want to die by a bullet because it would be quicker."
