They debuted in 2014 with the song "Happiness" with the members Joy, Seulgi, Wendy and Irene. The girl group originally consisted of four members, then the fifth member Yeri joined them in 2015 when they first released their mini-album called "Ice Cream Cake".

Aside from that, some people did not know that there is an 8 years age gap among the members, from youngest to oldest. Irene who is the group leader of the band was born in the year 1991, while Yeri is the youngest among the group members who was born in 1999. Red Velvet was the first girl group who made it under the SM Entertainment to have their debut in 5 years. 

Along with the other K-pop's biggest names during that time like Girl's Generation, EXO, TVXQ! and SHINee. Furthermore, they won multiple sets of awards during their hit single "Ice Cream Cake" that made their journey way too successful for each of them. But did you know that there is a hidden meaning behind Red Velvet's group name? They said that the "Red" stands for their attitude and fierceness while the "Velvet" stands for the member's softer image. 

In the year 2018, Time Magazine recognized them as one of the best K-pop groups that most people should know. The other members of them are not just singers they also have done some TV presenting. The group leader Irene starred in a Korean drama "Game Development Girls", and the other member Joy who played as one of the leads in a Korean drama as well named "The Great Seducer". 

Most of them are brand ambassadors that helped them to an extent their popularity within the music industry. This is considered somewhat unusual for some girl groups in South Korea because most of them only pay attention to their singing and dancing careers. 

In additional, Red Velvet was the first South Korean girl group since 2003 that performed at the Pyeongyang concert in North Korea. It gave them such a historic concert in North Korea. They continue to give diversity to the music taste of everyone.
