English Premier League: Swindon Town 0-1 Southampton

Southampton overcame Swindon Town at the County Ground when Jos Hooiveld scored the only goal of the match.

The new signing Graziano Pelle showed up very lovely against the League One side in his first appearance for Southampton on English soil. He almost opened the scoring on nine minutes after an amazing turn of pace from Nathaniel Clyne, who returned to the side after missing out on the tour of Holland with a groin injury.

Clyne moved away from his marker before releasing a cross for Pelle, who headed wide under pressure and soon afterwards Pelle linked up with Clyne again only for Clyne's effort to be thwarted by Wes Foderingham.

The winning team scored six minutes after the interval when Hooiveld connected with James Ward-Prowse's out swinging corner, and, although they might have beaten Foderingham again moments later, Saints had to settle for the one goal as Ward-Prowse headed substitute Emmanuel Mayuka's cross over the bar.

Southampton: Davis (Gazzaniga 46), Clyne (Chambers 62), Fonte (Yoshida 62), Hooiveld (Turnbull 62), Targett (McCarthy), Ward-Prowse (Stephens 62), Cork (Flannigan 62), Reed (Sharp 62), Isgrove (Sinclair 62), McQueen (Mayuka 46), Pelle (Gallagher 62).
