Windows Phone 8.1 Release Date: Upcoming GDR1 Update Will Bring Microsoft's OS Closer To Android

Windows Phone 8.1 release date has just rolled out to most Windows-powered smartphones, including Nokia's Lumia lineup. But as early as now, a new report shows that Microsoft may already be working on an update that further improve its mobile platform and bring it closer to what Android has to offer.

According to a new report by GSM Arena, Nokia Power User has gotten hold of intel that Microsoft is already developing the upcoming GDR1 update for the Windows Phone 8.1 version, and it looks like it will include folders in the Start homescreen.

Android has long been allowing users to create folders in their homescreens and group apps depending on their preferences. Now, Nokia Lumia and other handsets which would get the Windows Phone 8.1 release would be able to offer the same function.

So how would this work?

In the report by NokiaPowerUser, users would soon be able to drag tiles in the Start Screen and place them on top of other tiles, forming a folder where both apps can be accessed. This means the once cluttered homescreen of most WP users can now be more organized with the help of this feature.

The Windows Phone 8.1 release date brought a number of new features to Microsoft's platform that aim to bring it closer to Android in feature and functions. Another change that will come with the update is for WP devices' ability to support interactive phone cases, just like recent Android flagships.

The notification center, voice assistant, customizable home and lock screens, and now the ability to create folders on the homescreen - all of these are steps for the Redmond giant in order to make the switch from Android to Windows Phone smoother than ever.

Will Microsoft succeed? Once the GDR1 update for Windows Phone 8.1 gets released, we'll see.
