'True Detective' Season 2 Cast, Spoilers, News, And Rumors: Michael Fassbender, Jessica Chastain, Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, And Colin Farell All Rumored For Lead, HBO Will Announce Soon [PHOTO]

One of this past year's breakout hits was HBO's "True Detective," and fans can't wait to hear more. Here is everything currently known about "True Detective" season 2.

HBO executives say. "The two scripts we have ... I hate to jinx it ... they are more exciting than the first season," said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills on Thursday. [Creator Nic Pizzolatto is] an incredibly talented writer. And he's blown us away with the first two episodes."

Lombardo went on to say the casting announcement could come as soon as next week. While he didn't give any hints, he did say the cast would include some exciting names.

"The people we will cast will be well-known names, but [casting stars] wasn't our ambition," he said. "Great writing attracts great actors... Maybe people initially came for [Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson], but I think they stayed because the show was so compelling."

From what we've heard so far-not entirely confirmed-the second season will have three lead actors, be in a contemprary California setting, and deal with a conspiracy theory of some kind .

If the latest reports are accurate, then actor Christian Bale has rejected the offer to portray the lead character in the crime drama series 'True Detective' for its Season 2.

Latest reports stated that HBO contacted Christian Bale for the lead role in Season 2 to replace either McConaughey or Harrelson. However, it is said that Bale refused the role, as he leaned towards 'The Deep Blue Good-By,' a film adaptation of John D. McDonald's novel of the same name.

Christian Bale is, however, not the only actor who is rumored to have been considered for the second season of the show. The producers are rumored to have Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Jessica Chastain, Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin and Colin Farell in mind for the new season.

"Right now, we're working with three leads... The characters are all new, but I'm deeply in love with each of them. We've got the entire series broken out with a couple of scripts, and we'll probably start casting in earnest in the coming months."

As for the new setting, it will move things from the southern coast to the western coast of the United States:

"...It takes place in California - not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California - and we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season one."

Although HBO is yet to announce the premiere date of 'True Detective' Season 2, various reports have claimed that the series will air starting January, 2015.
