‘Kick Ass 3’ Release Date Set In 2016? Chloe Moretz Laments KA2 'Victim Of Piracy!' Appeals To Fans 'If You Want A Sequel, Buy The Ticket!'

The "Kick-Ass 2" sequel struggled due to a lot of factors and piracy was at the top of the list. Despite an underwhelming box-office performance and low critic reviews, interest for the film persists. Is it enough to ensure "Kick Ass 3" in 2016?

The creator of Kick-Ass, Mark Millar, is straightforward about the prospects of making a sequel. The artists work within a business, so he touches on the subject matter. From Comic Book Resources:

With "Kick-Ass," it was a no brainer. It was made for $28 million and made $100 million back and then made another $140 million on DVD. So for the money guys, it was a $28 million investment that made $240 million. That's a slam dunk. You're getting your sequel. The second one didn't make as much. It cost a little less at around $24 million, made $61 million and made about $100 million again on DVD and TV rights. It was still profitable. It was by no means "The Lone Ranger." But does that mean we'll make another one again? I don't know. It's definitely up in the air, and we'll just have to see."

Chloe Grace Moretz, who plays "Hit Girl" in the film series, reiterates that there is a legitimate audience for the film. Unfortunately, they a substantial number used unscrupulous ways to watch the film. From Movies with Butter:

"You know, I hope, I wish [for a third film] That's be fun. That'd be great. I doubt it, but I would love it. The hard thing is if fans want a third movie, they've got to go buy the ticket to go see the movie. It was like the second most pirated movie of the year, so if you want a movie to be made into a second, a third, a fourth and a fifth, go buy a ticket. Don't pirate it."

Moretz had a legitimate claim as the numbers did dwindle, but there were also other factors. There was the fact that Jim Carrey discredited the film right before the release but it's not clear how it directly affected the movie's returns (some would argue that it actually helped).  Critics also panned the sequel, so there might be some audiences who didn't feel it was worth shedding money for after the initial word of mouth-they'll just wait for the torrents!

The project can still be saved as it does not require a huge budget. They can take the "Blumhouse approach" of low budget, high profitability filmmaking (a la "The Purge").
