Showtime Renews ‘Masters of Sex’ and ‘Ray Donovan’: Could ‘Mean Girls’ Actress Lizzy Caplan Take Home The Emmy?

This week Showtime renewed "Masters of Sex" and "Ray Donovan" for their respective third seasons. Clearly the network believes in actress Lizzy Caplan enough to renew her show, but what are her chances for winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at this year's Emmys?

As TV networks announce their fall series and upcoming mandates, Showtime continues to lean on "Masters of Sex" and "Ray Donovan" to carry it into the next season. As reported by Variety, "Both hourlong series will receive 12-episode orders that will begin production in early 2015."

"Masters of Sex" stars Michael Sheen opposite "Mean Girls" veteran, Lizzy Caplan as Masters and Johnson, a famous medical team that catapulted the sexual revolution forward with their sex and relationship research. The show is currently airing its second season and averages nearly four million viewers across multiple platforms per week.

Lizzy Caplan's performance in the show has continued to impress, with Vulture calling her "imminently watchable" in the recap of the series premiere. When her Emmy nomination was finally announced she admitted to People magazine, "I had come to the conclusion that it was not going to happen for me, but probably for the show and definitely for Michael Sheen. I was shocked."

What are the chances that the goth girl from "Mean Girls" can win the prestigious Emmy?

She'll definitely have her work cut out for her as the category is steep with competition. Firstly, Claire Danes is also nominated and she has won the award four times already, twice in a row for "Homeland." On the other hand, in case voters feel like it's time to pass on the torch, there's a good chance it could go to Kerry Washington for "Scandal" as she was previously nominated for the show and perhaps it's time she won.

All eyes will be on this and more at the Emmys, which will air next Monday on NBC. Until then, fans of Lizzy Caplan can catch the actress on "Masters of Sex" on Sundays at 10pm on Showtime.
