Mindy Kaling Discusses Losing ‘Bridesmaids’ Role To Maya Rudolph: ‘Mindy Project’ Star Says She’s Never Called To Auditions Because She’s Too ‘Specific’

Mindy Kaling almost starred in "Bridesmaids"? Imagine what hilarity could have been.

The actress and writer recently opened up on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live" regarding her busy career. Despite penning and starring in "The Mindy Project," which will soon premiere its third season, Kaling admits that she has lost out on film roles due to her unique persona.

"No one ever calls me in to audition for things because I'm so specific," said Kaling during the chat with Meredith Vieira and host Andy Cohen. After confessing that she was up for a role in the massively successful film "Bridesmaids," which the actress declared that she "loved," Kaling couldn't help but share her disappointment over not getting the job.

"It was for Maya Rudolph's part. I practiced it so much and was so into it and I loved that whole cast," said the actress. "That was one that was a heartbreaker."

Kaling later teased that she had been offered "a lot of searing dramas, like '12 Years a Slave.'"

"I was like, 'I can't do it! Tell Lupita Nyong'o to do it. I don't have the time.' Michael Fassbender was mad. It was a thing," joked Kaling.

In terms of "The Mindy Project," the comedienne revealed that the new season will include some heavy romance between Mindy and Danny.

"There's something sexy and fun about all the new boyfriends coming in, but we found that with Mindy and Danny together, the show is actually so much more rated-R than before," Kaling said in an interview with TIME.

And what's it like to film a TV love scene with co-star Chris Messina?

"A joy," the actress gushes. "Chris Messina is the most in-touch-with-his-body person of all time, and all he does is make you feel beautiful and confident. I've known him now for quite some time and we're so comfortable with each other that I wasn't self-conscious at all. I wish on every actress that they get to shoot a sex scene with Chris Messina, because it's great fun.
