Robin Thicke 'Blurred Lines' Written By Pharrell? Singer Says He Was Too Wasted, Quit Drugs After Paula Patton Left

Robin Thicke made some surprising assertions, recently, when sitting for a deposition regarding the lawsuit against him by Marvin Gaye’s family. The singer, who is being accused of ripping off Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up” in the creation of his “Blurred Lines,” claimed that he wasn’t actually very involved in the song’s writing – because he was too wasted to be of use. He went on to say that his partner Pharrell was really responsible for the song’s creation, that he was wasted when he gave interviews saying otherwise, and that he only began to address his problem with pain pills and alcohol after wife Paula Patton left him.

TMZ reports that when opposing counsel asked Thicke if he helped write “Blurred Lines,” he responded, “I was high on Vicodin and alcohol when I showed up at the studio,” and that he was too intoxicated to really contribute. In an apparent effort to shift the blame, the singer insisted, “The reality is that Pharrell had the beat and he wrote almost every single part of the song.”

Opposing counsel then pushed Thicke to explain a past interview with GQ, in which he said, “Pharrell and I were in the studio and I told him that one of my favorite songs of all time was Marvin Gaye’s ‘Got To Give It Up.’ I was like, ‘Damn, we should make something like that, something with that groove.”

Thicke’s response: “With all due respect, I was high and drunk every time I gave an interview last year.” The singer went on to say, “Every day, I woke up, I would take a Vicodin to start the day and then I would fill up a water bottle with vodka and drink it before and during my interviews.”

Thicke said during the deposition that his drinking and drug use were the reasons Patton called it quits. He insisted that, “I’ve been sober for the last 2 months… When your wife leaves you, it gives you good reason to sober up.” Later, though, he clarified that by “sober” he doesn’t mean he’s stopped drinking, just that he kicked the pills.
