The faded, red Urban Outfitters Kent State sweatshirt was put by the clothing store on sale as part of their vintage collection and was priced at $129.

The shirt, which was captioned by the company with "Get it or regret it!" was marked as sold out on the site and will reportedly be destroyed according to the company's spokesswoman Crystal Carroll.

According to ABC News, several postings on social media were made regarding the "offensive connotations of the sweatshirt." Some people shared their outrage for the retail company's apparent insensitivity towards the 1970 Kent State massacre, in which four students of were shot dead by Ohio National Guard Soldiers as they protested the Vietnam war.

In a statement on Monday, Kent State shared their disgust over what Urban Outfitters did, saying: "May 4, 1970 was a watershed moment for the country and especially the Kent State family. We lost four students that day while nine others were wounded and countless others were changed forever. We take great offense to a company using our pain for the publicity and profit. This item is beyond poor taste and trivializes a loss of life that still hurts the Kent State community today."

Urban Outfitters released an apology via their official Twitter account, saying: "Urban Outfitters sincerely apologizes for any offense our Vintage Kent State Sweatshirt may have caused. It was never our intention to allude to the tragic events that took place at Kent State in 1970 and we are extremely saddened that this item was perceived as such."

The company went on to explain the appearance and condition of the Urban Outfitters Kent State sweatshirt, saying: "The one-of-a-kind item was purchased as part of our sun-faded vintage collection. There is no blood on this shirt nor has this item been altered in any way. [The red stains] are discoloration from the original shade of the shirt and the holes are from natural wear and fray."

Apart from the Urban Outfitters Kent State sweatshirt fiasco, the company also received flak previously for putting up a shirt with the print "Eat Less" on sale.
