Tom Hiddleston To Take Lead Role In 'Skull Island:' 'Thor' Star Will Face King Kong In Movie Exploring Origins Of The Mega-Ape [PHOTO]

According to The Guardian, British actor Tom Hiddleston will be playing the lead role in the King Kong 'origins' film "Skull Island." Hiddleston has risen to fame playing Loki in Marvel's productions of Thor and The Avengers, and will likely attract his many fans as well as a large science fiction/fantasy base to watch the new production.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts will be directing the movie, which is being produced by Legendary Films. Vogt-Roberts is known for being the director and executive producer of "The Kings of Summer," and is currently directing Sony's "Metal Gear Solid." Original reports stated that Legendary Films was eyeing Attack the Block filmmaker Joe Cornish for the role of director, but moved on as Cornish was too busy with his movie "Section Six."

And now for some more details - the script for "Skull Island" is by Max Borenstein, who wrote the script for "Godzilla." The making of the blockbuster was announced this past July at Comic Con, and, according to USA Today, Universal Pictures will distribute the film on November 4, 2016.

There hasn't been much new information about Hiddleston's character or the plot, but reports suggest it might be a story about the origins of King Kong and his mysterious and dangerous habitat.

Peter Jackson's 2005 film "King Kong" focused on Skull Island for a short time before the plot moved to New York. Representatives of  "Skull Island" commented, "...Staying on and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world," conveying their excitement to create a new and fantastical setting.

Deadline announced that Legendary Films has many new releases in the making. Besides "Skull Island," it has "Warcraft," the Michael Mann-directed "Blackhat," the Guillermo del Toro directed "Crimson Peak," and the upcoming sequels to "Pacific Rim" and "Godzilla."
