New Apple iOS 8 Needs 5GB Worth Of Space To Install: Update Your iPhone Or iPad Without Deleting All Your Files

While previous iOS updates would only set you back around 1GB of free space, the new iOS 8 requires a whopping 5.6GB of free space to install.

Plus, this is actually just a rough estimate as the space needed varies depending on whichever device you using. It can even increase up to 7GB on some old iPad models.

Needless to say, if you have an 8GB iPhone 5C or even a 16GB iPhone then you're likely run into a bit of trouble adjusting.

7GB? Who in the world has that much storage available?

Last year's iOS 7 update required just about 3GB of free space, no wonder the 5GB minimum could be a tough pill to swallow.

Netizens had been in rage upon realizing that they have to delete apps, photo, music, (read: almost everything) just to make room for the iOS 8 software upgrade.

Here are some of a few die-hard Apple fanboys (and girls) trying to move mountains just to make room for the big updates.

Thankfully there is a way that doesn’t involve you going crazy choosing what data to delete from your device.

Instead of installing Over-The-Air, just sync your device to the computer and download iOS 8 directly from there. This would be perfect as iTunes doesn’t require users to have free space to download. It might be a tad bit less convenient but it’s the best way if you want to install iOS 8 without deleting all your apps, music and photos. Just make sure that you got the newest version of iTunes installed on your computer so it can see the iOS 8 update.
To update your device, just plug the iPhone or iPad and syc. Select “Check for Update” when the prompt pops up on iTunes and not the “restore iPhone” option. The latter would wipe your device clean.

You’ll also be asked to make a backup. We strongly suggest that you do so as it’s very important to keep a copy of your files before installing a large update such as the iOS 8. The download can take approximately take 15-30 minutes, depending on your internet connection.

One thing that we want to stress out is that won’t actually lose whatever storage space you have prior to the upgrade. The iOS 8 file would not occupy 5 HB of storage that it requires to download. Once the progress is complete, you’ll be left with more or less the same amount of storage you had before installing the iOS 8 update.
