This past Tuesday, President Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged a renewed partnership between the US and India. The relationship between the two countries has historically been strong, but is thought to have drifted somewhat in recent years.

According to USA Today, the Tuesday meeting between the two leaders touched on economy, trade, education, and job training in order to help young people compete in the global marketplace. It also discussed counter-terrorism, energy development, health policy, and space exploration.

After the meeting was over, Obama told reporters that the US and India "have so much in common," and that he and Modi also chatted about efforts to roll back the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, forge Middle East peace, wind down the war in Afghanistan, and stop the spread of Ebola in West Africa.

Modi in turn commented that the US and India "have the foundation of a strong partnership... we now have to revive the momentum and ensure that we get the best out of it for our people and the world."

The outcome of the meeting was a vision statement titled, "Chalein Saath Saath: Forward Together We Go." The statement asserts that the countries' strategic partnership rests on their shared mission to provide equal opportunity for their people through democracy and freedom as well as combating terrorist threats and responding to humanitarian crises.

The statement also promised a reformed United Nations Security Council, ensured the creation of affordable, clean, reliable, and diverse sources of energy, and joint research and technology collaboration. It ended by stating that the renewed partnership will be a model for the rest of the world.

In an op-ed for the Washington Post, Obama and Modi stated that their relationship "involved more bilateral collaboration than ever before," and that the true potential of the relationship has yet to be realized.
