Baywatch Movie Starring In The Works Starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson! Will The 'People Champion' Accept The Role After Shazam Movie?

The 1990s was a time when there was a rise in situational comedy like Friends, Seinfeld, Home Improvement and Full House. Baywatch was one show which successfully managed to work its way into homes of millions of viewers across the globe. Though it was canceled following season 1 on NBC, Baywatch series successfully played in syndication for another ten years in 148 countries and also was adapted into 44 different languages.

There have been plans about making a Baywatch movie since a long time now. In 2005, with an action oriented script for Dreamworks, Jay Sherick and David Ronn (The Smurfs) first took a crack at the idea. Four years later, Jeremy Garelick (The Wedding Ringer) was hired to rewrite the script into a comedy. A year later after the rights moved to Paramount, the script was supposedly rewritten in the style of Charlie's Angels by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka (The Sitter). Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant (Reno 911!) were the latest screenwriters to mention the project about a year ago.

So far for some reason, no one has been able to nail down a Baywatch movie and that's one reason why today's news is so surprising. As reported by THR, the project is back on at Paramont and apparently Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson will be starring in it. The script will be rewritten by Justin Malen (Bad Teacher 2) while famous comedy writers John Morris and Sean Anders (We're the Millers) will direct. Though a Baywatch movie has not gone beyond this, Dwayne Johnson's attachment should give one pause.

Dwayne has his hands full with upcoming projects like  Shazam, The Janson Directive and Journey 3 and Journey 4 and it is unclear where this project is on his list of priorities and if Dwayne leaves the project, there is a possibility that it could go in an undetermined state.

With a director attached to the project, there is a hope that the movie will finally get made. TV drama like Jump Street turned into a comedy film and did well enough to produce a sequel. If writer Malen and directors Anders and Morris use a similar tone and Paramount hires some talented and hot cast, they might have a hit on their hands.
