Sally Kirkland Surgery: Oscar Nominated Actress Falls On Her Way To Accept Award, Undergoes Emergency Surgery For a Broken Leg

Sally Kirkland has undergone emergency surgery after breaking her leg in two places in a bad fall at the Studio City Film Festival Sunday in Los Angeles.

According to TMZ, the 71-year-old actress was walking to the stage to accept the award for Best Actress in a Dramatic Short, when she fell to the ground, breaking her leg and twisting her ankle.

Kirkland's surgery took place on Monday. The actress is currently resting, according to her spokesperson.

"Currently suffering from extreme pain, Sally remains hospitalized following a successful surgery to repair the injuries resulting from her fall," Kirkland's spokesperson told TMZ. "Despite the circumstances, Sally is in good spirits and is optimistic about her recovery."

The spokesperson said Kirkland blames her fall on poor lighting in the theater.

The 71-year-old actress has starred in dozens of films in a professional career that spans over five decades. Her credits include "The Sting," "JFK" and "Anna." It was for "Anna that she won her first and only Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. The film also earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

No word on whether Kirkland will need additional surgery.
