Family Awarded $63 Million From Johnson & Johnson For Extremely Rare Side-Effects on Motrin

A Massachusetts family is to receive $63 million by Johnson & Johnson, health care company after a teenage girl experienced a life-threatening reaction losing most of her skin by taking children's Motrin nearly a decade ago.

A Plymouth Superior Court jury reached a decision for J&J and its McNeil Laboratories subsidiary to pay Samantha Reckis and her parents a total of $109 million, including interest.

The family attorney Brad Henry said Reckis was 7 years old when given children's Motrin brand ibuprofen. She had a severe rare side effect known as toxic epidermal necrolysis losing up to 90 percent of her skin and was blinded. She currently has 20 percent lung capacity.

The Johnson & Johnson spokeswoman said the girl's family suffered a tragedy but disagrees with the ruling and is "considering additional legal options."
