South African Police Officers Accused Of Murdering Taxi Driver Arrested In Front Of A Crowd And Found Dead At Police Station [VIDEO]

The police who arrested a taxi driver in front of a crowd are being investigated for the man's murder.

According to a statement issued by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate in Pretoria, two officers said they first approached the man, a 27-year-old taxi driver, because he was "obstructing traffic" at a market in Daveyton township, east of Johannesburg on Tuesday evening.

The officers claimed that the man assaulted one of the officers and grabbed his gun, before the other officer "overpowered the taxi driver and handed the firearm back to his colleague."

Anyone can be a reporter and a witness was able to record the actions of this event. South Africa's Daily Sun newspaper would then post the video on its Facebook.

The video shows the police officers attempting to drag this away from the crowd of people. A police van would then arrive and the officers would tie the man up to the back of the van, which had been opened.

Those who witnessed this scene were screaming, objecting to what the police were doing to him.

On Wednesday, the review board said that about two hours after the arrest, the taxi driver was found dead at the police station where he had been driven. "The cause of death was found to be head injuries with internal bleeding," they said.

The dead man's name is Mido Macia. He was an immigrant from Mozambique.

"They killed him," an unnamed prisoner at the police station in Daveyton told the Daily Sun. "They beat him up so badly in here."

Another witness who was at a market nearby of the arrest, told the Daily Sun what she saw.

"He was in pain, he cried and asked the cops to stop but they continued anyway,"

Another man added, "If he was parked on the wrong side of the road, they were supposed to give him a ticket, not kill him."

The review board plans to have the video used in court and is seeking to talk to the person who shot the video.

Moses Mr. Dlamini is a spokesman for the review board and said, "We are shocked ourselves, by the video in part because it appears to show the officers had no fear that they might be held accountable for torturing a man in broad daylight in front of dozens of witnesses." "The police don't even care that there are people who are watching, they're witnesses."

As of Wednesday, the officers remained on duty.
