Rory McIlroy Quits By Walking Off Course? During Middle of Round on Honda Classic [VIDEO]

The world number one golfer Rory McIlroy is making headlines for withdrawing as he simply walked off the golf course Friday during Honda Classic in Florida.

The defending champion took a troubled turn as he simply walked straight to his car with his caddie, JP Fitzgerald, his coach, Michael Bannon, and two police officers as he drove off, after his second shot in the par 5 -18th hole landed in the water.

McIlroy told reported as he walked to the parking lot that he was not in a good place mentally.

"There's not really much I can say, guys," McIlroy said. "I'm not in a good place mentally, you know?"

Then the 23-year-old was asked if anything was wrong physically, to which he answered, "No." When asked about his swing, he said, "Yeah, I really don't know what's going on."

McIlroy's playing partner, Ernie Els was not impressed when he shook his hand on the 18th after deciding not to take another shot. "I'm a great fan of Rory's, but I don't think that was the right thing to do," the Open champion said.

McIlroy released a statement later in the day through the PGA Tour's official website.

"I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out in the near future," McIlroy said. "It began bothering me again last night, so I relieved it with Advil. It was very painful again this morning, and I was simply unable to concentrate. It was really bothering me and had begun to affect my playing partners."

McIlroy added, "I came here with every intention of defending my Honda Classic title. Even though my results haven't revealed it, I really felt like I was rounding a corner. I regret having to make the decision to withdraw, but it was one I had to make. I apologize to the Honda Classic and PGA Tour."

Golf fans have expressed their frustration on Twitter about Rory's action. Below are some comments take from Twitter.

"He better get the same ridicule that tiger gets when he does this. Golf is a very frustrating sport but you still never just walk off the course if you're playing bad. It's disrespectful to the tournament, the fans and the group you are playing with. Tiger's only competition for the majors right now looks like himself."
