Baby Born After Mom Killed in Car Wreck En Route to NY Hospital, Newborn in Serious Condition, 'Tragedy Beyond Belief'

A baby was born after mom killed in car crash as the couple was heading to the hospital Sunday morning.

Police launched a "full-on search" Sunday for a suspected hit-and-run driver and passenger in the BMW sedan that hit a taxi cab. Raizi Gluber, 21 was pronounced dead at separate hospitals after being thrown out from the cab, her husband, Nathan Gluber in the cab was also killed.

However the baby survived as doctors at Bellevue were able to deliver a premature infant boy by cesarean section and is in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the cab is reportedly in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital.

"Upon impact, the male driver and additional occupant of Vehicle #2 fled the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle behind," police said in a statement.

At the time of the crash, the couple was "heading to Long Island College Hospital for a wellness check," said Officer Sophia Tassy-Mason, a spokeswoman for the New York City Police Department.

The young Orthodox Jewish couple was "preparing for the most joyous moment in life, to become parents, ready to build a castle to the future and build a family," said Isaac Abraham, community leader and neighbor of the couple.

Abraham described the crash as "a tragedy beyond (belief)," and said the infant son is currently in serious condition.

A funeral for the couple was scheduled for Sunday in the largely Orthodox Jewish district of Williamsburg in the New York borough of Brooklyn, according to the website Vos Iz Neias (What's News?), which describes itself as the voice of the Orthodox Jewish community.
