$1,800 ATM Mistake: Delaware Student, Devon Gluck Returns All The Money to PNC Bank 'Honesty is Always The Best Policy'

A $1,800 ATM mistake didn't have a student at the University of Delaware running to keep the cash for himself.

Instead, Devon Gluck finance major returned the cash that was accidentally dispensed at a campus ATM.

The incident occurred on February 1 when he went to a PNC Bank ATM in the Trabant University Center to make a withdrawal. Then he noticed strange noises coming from the ATM soon after it dispensed 18 $100 bills.

"My eyes just opened really wide, and I was like, 'Oh my god, this is $1,800 right here,' " Gluck told The News Journal. "It's pretty crazy." He later consulted the matter with his father.

"After a couple days of just thinking about it, the right thing would be just to return the money," he added. "I mean, it was just eating at me at the time because it isn't mine and I didn't even know what to do with it."

PNC spokeswoman Marcy Zwiebel confirmed that a student returned cash that was dispensed by the ATM. The money was reportedly taken out from a student's account, which has been refunded by the bank.

"Honesty is always the best policy when talking about money, and keeping money that you're not authorized to have for any amount of time is unlawful," she said.

Gluck shared the PNC branch manager thanked him for returning the cash.

"I kind of just thought maybe I can get something good out of this," Gluck said. "I'll definitely feel better, and I'm looking into going into banking and finance, so I felt like this was a good opportunity to meet someone, get a good reference and do the right thing."
