New Batman Mythology: DC Entertainment To Re-Examine Bruce Wayne’s Transformation Into Batman, The ‘Dark Knight’ As Part Of ‘New 52’ Comics

A new Batman mythology is being introduced this coming June by DC Entertainment, the creators of the series, as a part of the 'New 52'.

The part of the Batman mythology set to get revamped is Batman's transformative years, according to the Associated Press.

DC Entertainment will add to Batman's mythology by looking into Bruce Wayne's, a.k.a. Batman's, past to see how he began his transformation from wealthy heir to the nighttime guardian of Gotham City.

Parts of Batman's history are staying the same, according to Scott Snyder, the writer of "Batman" since it re-launched in 2011. For example, the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents will reportedly remain consistent.

Snyder is an Eagle Award-winning writer whose other DC comics include "Swamp Thing" and "American Vampire."

On Monday, Snyder said, "It's not 'let's redo the origin'. It's time for a new story showing how Batman became who he is in the New 52."

The New 52 is a reorganization of the publisher's characters that gave many heroes new origins and costumes, blending their original appearances with modern updates.

The decision to re-examine Batman's mythology reportedly came from the success of the first 6 months of DC Comics' New 52.

Snyder claimed that readers will be able to see how Batman deals with his calling to fight crime and read about the challenges Batman faced when first becoming the Dark Knight.

"We tried to preserve as much of Batman's history as we could and keep what we could of this history intact. It's 'The Zero Year,' the one that no one has told the story of before. We see how Bruce became the Batman, built the cave, faced off with his first super villain," Snyder explained.

Although the story of Batman will get some major additions, Batman's origin story won't be re-written.

"We're not going to take apart 'Year One'," Snyder added.

'Year One' refers to the four-issue arc recounting how Wayne began to fight crime after being away for years, written by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli.

Instead, the new 'Zero Year' story will give readers new insight into the Bob Kane-created character who was first introduced in May 1939 via the "Detective Comics" No. 27.

The new and improved origin story will begin in June's issue of 'Batman' in an 11-issue story called "The Zero Year", illustrated by Greg Capullo, according to the Associated Press.

"It's time for a new story showing how Batman became who he is in the New 52. It builds up the mythology," Snyder concluded.
