The woman Richard Burton left to marry Elizabeth Taylor has died.

Sybil Christopher, a theater producer and nightclub founder, died at 83.

The New York Times reported that Christopher died on Thursday, March 7 in New York City.

Long Island's Bay Street Theater has posted an obituary for Richard Burton's ex wife on its website.

Christopher was Welsh-born, and her marriage to Burton was her first one. Burton left her for Taylor in 1963.

After Burton's departure, Christopher left California for New York, where she opened a nightclub with some famous friends' backing. Julie Andrews and Leonard Bernstein were two such supporters at the 1965 club opening.

The club, 'Arthur', became a popular spot among celebrities, and gave Christopher a reputation for success after her very public divorce.

In 1966, Sybil Christopher married Jordan Christopher, the lead singer of the nightclub's band.

Sybil Christopher founded the Bay Street Theater in 1991 with two partners, and remained involved in directing for 22 years.

Actress Kate Burton, of 127 Hours and Unfaithful, and two other daughters survive Sybil Christopher.
