Lady Gaga’s Wheelchair: Pop Star Commissioned Jewelry Designer To Create 24-Karat Wheelchair While Recovering From Hip Surgery

Lady Gaga’s wheelchair, like the owner who commissioned it, is one of a kind. Although it’s not exactly how her 'Born This Way' listeners would approach their own recovery, the pop star knows how to pimp her way into getting attention with whatever she’s going through.

Lady Gaga commissioned jewelry designer Ken Borochov, of the label Mordekai, to design the wheelchair so she can be wheeled around in style. Gaga recently received surgery for an inflammatory joint infection in her hip called synovitis. The discomfort caused her to cancel the remainder of her ‘Born This Way’ tour.

Borochov told the Daily Beast that Gaga’s request came only with a week’s notice. “It was a huge undertaking,” according to the designer. The designer also told the New York Post that, “I certainly wasn’t expecting that phone call and have never done a wheelchair but am always up for a challenge and was thrilled to create what I affectionately dubbed the Chariot, a chair fit only for a queen.”

Borochov created the chair using manufacturers around the country, only finishing the gold and tufted leather masterpiece (complete with a removable canopy) on Sunday evening. “It was made all over the United States, my assistant had to run around everywhere,” Borochov shares. A total of 1.5 ounces of gold were plated onto the chair. It was gold-plated in Dallas but was assembled in Madison, WI at Regal Roadsters according to Borochov’s publicist.

Now, he may have created Lady Gaga’s wheelchair, but Borochov, 30, has never met Gaga in the flesh. “When the time is right,” he said. The 30-year-old Israeli-born fashion designer started his luxury jewel brand two years ago in New York and it has quickly gained traction. His first celebrity endorsements came from Kanye West and Nicki Minaj, with Gaga being the third.

The designer will not disclose the total price the singer paid for her golden mode of transportation, but according to today’s exchange rates, the chair’s gold weight clocks in at nearly $2,600.00 on its own. Borochov is also unaware if she’ll actually use it. It has only been seen with Gaga on it during a seemingly planned-out photo shoot with the pop star’s photographer pal, Terry Richardson.

Despite the pomp and glamour of a golden wheelchair, it doesn’t come with the latest wheelchair technologies like electrically powered navigation. However, the chair, the designer argues, is still functional despite its intentionally boosted fashion quotient. One of its best features: It can fully recline.
