49ers Trade Alex Smith With Kansas City Chiefs; Super Bowl 2013 Contender Gets Second-Round Pick & Conditional Choice For 2014 Drafts In Exchange

It’s official! The 49ers trade Alex Smith, giving Kansas City Chiefs a new quarterback. The trade was made official last Tuesday, almost two weeks after each side agreed to it.

In exchange, the 49ers will receive the Chief’s second-round pick, 34th overall, and a conditional choice in the 2014 drafts, according to a source familiar with the terms, the Associated Press reports.

As the 49ers trade Alex Smith, the Chiefs are expected to release its current quarterback, Matt Cassel. Most of the terms regarding the official trade are left undisclosed.

Smith, 28, struggled much of his career with San Francisco but has blossomed the past couple seasons under new coach, Jim Harbaugh. It is seen that when the 49ers trade Alex Smith, the new arrangement is deemed as an upgrade for Kansas City.

Aside from the Alex Smith trade deal that was finalized Tuesday, the 49ers also completed acquiring wide receiver Anquan Boldin from the Baltimore ravens.

San Francisco picked Boldin from the Ravens for a sixth-round choice in the updating NFL draft.

Boldin had 22 catches for 380 yards and four touchdowns in the last post-season. His record includes six receptions for 104 yards and the first touchdown in Super Bowl XLVII, where the Ravens beat the 49ers 34-31.

The wide receiver was with Baltimore for three seasons after playing with the Arizona Cardinals for seven. His total game and play record is: 772 receptions for 10,165 yards and 58 touchdowns in 140 NFL games.

Smith had been the 49ers starting quarterback until he was injured last season and ceded the position to Colin Kaepernick. The 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl with Kaepernick as quarterback.

Smith, 28, was the first overall pick in the 2005 draft and passed for a total of 14,280 yards with 81 touchdowns throughout all of eight seasons in San Francisco.

Speaking about the 49ers agreement to trade Smith, General Manager Trent Baalke, said “We would like to thank Alex for his contributions to the 49ers organization over the past eight years. He is a true professional who represented the 49ers with class on and off the field.”

Kansas City has a 2-14 streak last season behind Matt Cassell and Brady Quinn, who split the starting duties.

Kansas City also agreed to deals Tuesday with former Saints backup quarterback Chase Daniel and former Dolphins tight end Anthony Fasano. Fasano is expected to compete with Tony Moeaki for the starting job.
