The X-Files Reboot News Update: Mulder And Scully Break Up And Blow Out; X-Files Will Continue Arc And Standalone Episodes; Didn’t The Lone Gunmen Die in 2002? Sveta Is The Key

The X-Files Series Reboot News Update: Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully broke up since the last "X-Files" movie. This might not affect rumors that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are secretly married, but it does change the dynamic on the show.

Remember, during the first run of The X-Files, there was a lot of anticipation for some romance between the two special agents. Dana, with her "too red hair" and "little feet that didn't reach the pedal" or her rent-a-car and the spooky spy with the "I want to believe poster" seemed the perfect geek match until they actually spent time with each other.

According to the latest trailer, Agent Scully is just a "friend and physician" to Mulder. The X-Files revival doesn't just have David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's characters separated, they are prone to blowing up at each other.  You don't see that happening with Kermit and Miss Piggy, who also announced their spilt this week.

Entertainment Weekly got Fox network to confirm that Mulder and Scully are filing separate tax forms.

The X-Files event series airs in January 2016, and will consist of six episodes.

Mitch Pileggi's Walter Skinner and The Lone Gunmen trio will return to the show, along with new actors including Rhys Derby, Joel McHale and Robbie Amell. Wait, the Lone Gunmen are coming back? Didn't they throw themselves on a bioterrorist weapon in 2002? Or was it because they knew the truth about 9/11 long before it happened? I thought they were now ghosts who only showed up to watch Mulder pee.

FOX recently had a screening of a scene from upcoming "X-Files" miniseries for the 2015 TCA summer press tour audience.

"Mulder, you hang up on me, I don't hear from you all day, you're on some jag about the X-Files?" asked Scully in the clip.

"I finally figured it out, all these years we've been deceived," Mulder figures out.

"I couldn't call you because it's gonna sound crazy. Scully, you gotta trust me on this."

"You want to believe, you so badly want to believe!" Scully tells him.

Mulder believes reports from newscaster Tad O'Malley, played by Joel McHale, will reveal "an alien conspiracy." "The truth is out there and Tad O'Malley's gonna broadcast it," Mulder believes.

"Mulder, listen to me - as your friend and as a physician, you are on dangerous ground here," Scully reminds him, while not offering to fill his prescription.

Mulder also reveals that the alien abduction victim Sveta, played by Annet Mahendru from "The Americans," is the "key to everything ... Sveta is the key."

"You're seeing a scene from our first episode back," Dana Walden, Chairman and CEO of Fox Television Group, told Slash Film.

"As you may recall, the mix of episodes we did was mythology episodes, episodes that dug deeper into the conspiracy of the X-Files, and then there were great spooky standalone episodes. That's still the mix we'll be exploring in this run.

"They feel ripe for reinvention and a great opportunity to reunite meaningful characters who people were attached to, tell fresh stories about them," Walden told Slash Film.

"They've taken a significant hiatus and they're event miniseries. We're not suggesting that we're rebooting The X-Files longterm. It felt like there was a great opportunity to bring back two characters who have enormous chemistry together and tell some new stories now that we have new fans and people that remember it from the original run."

"The X-Files" premieres Jan. 24, 2016.
