Gigi Hadid Had Rough Start With Modeling Career? Told To Lose Weight To Land Gigs?

Gigi Hadid apparently had a rough start with her modeling career, and it had something to do with her body, E! News learned.

Fans of the 20-year-old model might have noticed that she has a body unlike other models, and Hadid is not about to change the way she looks.

Following the footsteps of her mother, former model and "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Yolanda Foster, she made her runway debut at the Desigual Fall 2014 fashion show in New York for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and since then, the young model's calendar has been full. However, it wasn't always like that.

In an interview she granted to the Daily Mail Australia, Gigi Hadid admitted that modeling agencies told her she had to lose weight if she wanted to be a model.

"When I first went to visit different agencies in New York, a lot of them were like, you have to lose a lot of weight," she told the newspaper. "I would cry at night and my mom [Yolanda Foster] would be like, 'We're going to find the [right] people'."

It appears that the agencies found the blonde's athletic and powerful body unappealing.

"My thighs were huge, they were like rock!" she told the Daily Mail. "I had like crazy muscles and I [ate] like a man - more than the man that I eat like now, like a bigger man - and it was crazy but at the time I didn't care what my body looked like, I just wanted to be the best volleyball player I could be so it didn't really matter to me."

Rather than give in to the demands of the modeling agencies, Hadid embraced her curves, and as Hollywood Life pointed out, she has become one of the most in demand models in the world at such a young age.

Since Gigi Hadid's foray into modeling, she has walked catwalks for top designers and even booked modeling gigs for "Sports Illustrated", Guess, Tom Ford and Victoria's Secret. Maybelline New York likewise tapped her as celebrity spokesmodel.

"If you just kind of embrace yourself, like, other people accept you in the same way," Hadid told Daily Mail Australia. "And I think that's really cool, to tell other people...that you don't always have to go with the cookie-cutter version of what people tell you you're supposed to be."
