'Sherlock' Star Benedict Cumberbatch Dresses Down Before Stage Performance Amid 'Hamlet' Mixed Reviews

Benedict Cumberbatch's turn as Hamlet in a theater play opened to mixed reviews, but the "Sherlock" star seems unaffected as he was snapped in casual clothes in London on Friday.

"Benedict, who will star in the tragedy till the end of October, looked laid back in a grey printed T-shirt teamed with jeans and white trainers," said Daily Mail. "With his curly mane styled in a side part, Cumberbatch topped his look with a navy jacket as he accessorized with a silver face watch which featured black straps."

Benedict Cumberbatch's performance in the stage play "Hamlet" was both panned and praised by critics.

Kate Malby wrote for The Times, "Poor Benedict. It's hard to flatten Hamlet: he is, after all, Shakespeare's most quicksilver creation. As he wrestles with whether or not to avenge his father's murder, our prince touches on sin, fate, truth, beauty - what he doesn't do, as far as I recall, is distil three hours' worth of philosophy into a Nat King Cole cliché."

She added that there's "little subtlety" in "Sherlock" actor Benedict Cumberbatch's performance as Hamlet.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that The Times scathing review of Benedict Cumberbatch "sparked outrage."

"Playwright Roy Williams tweeted that the review was 'not fair at all' and that previews were called previews 'for a reason,'" it said.

Actor Eddie Marsan wrote on Twitter, "Kate Maltby at the Times, in same spirit as your review of Benedict's Hamlet 3 weeks early, let us see & judge 1st drafts of your articles."

But Jan Moir over at Daily Mail praised "Sherlock" actor Benedict Cumberbatch's performance of "Hamlet," as he described the actor as "electrifying."

"Was it a case of alas poor Benedict, I knew him well? Or did the actor, who once admitted he looked like an otter, triumph in the blasted palace of Elsinore in the rotten state of Denmark?" he wrote.

"By the time he took his bows three hours later, drenched in sweat, the audience were on their feet, clamoring for more."
