Will Smith's Egotistical 'Django' Comments Upset Fans

There has been some fan backlash directed toward Will Smith after his Entertainment Weekly interview proves the actor's head might be bigger than expected.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Will Smith talks about why he turned down the role in Quentin Tarantino's smash hit Django: Unchained.

It seems the 44-year-old actor did not want to be cast in a supporting role to Christoph Waltz's bounty hunting Dr. King Schultz.

"Django wasn't the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead!" said Will Smith.

He also told EW that before the project was finalized he asked Tarantino to change the script and give Django a more central role in the film. "I was like, 'No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!'"

Ultimately, with Tarantino's creative process not to be interrupted, Smith turned down the role, opening it up for Jamie Foxx.

Ironically enough, when the award season rolled around, it was Foxx who was billed as the movie's lead actor with Waltz in the supporting category.

Will Smith did extend praise for the film, however, adding, "I thought it was brilliant," he says. "Just not for me."

So, was the actor's honesty something to be praised or something to be scorned? Judging by the response from fans, it appears to be the latter.

One op-ed piece that has been getting a lot of attention is aptly named 'Will Smith is a Pompous Asshat.'

Immediately after being posted to the Entertainment Weekly website, commenters chirped in with their opinions. Most tended to agree the role was better suited for Foxx anyways, and many agreed Will Smith has a big ego.

"I've always thought this guy was a pompous ass. This story doesn't help prove me wrong," wrote one.

Another said, "Yeah..not a great PR move. I mean I've heard from many that Will is a VERY nice guy, really down to earth and very family-centric...but he seems to be REALLY pompous as well. Oh well, I still like him."
