Global Icon: What To Expect From The Newest Girl Group With A Twist

Simtong Entertainment is pumping fans up for the debut of their first girl group, Global Icon (GI). On Wednesday they will officially release their first single, "Beatles." One look at the teaser photos and videos and it's clear - these aren't your typical K-Pop girls.

The tomboy concept behind the group is one that the label hopes will set them apart from the competition and encourage people to be fans of the music, not just a pretty girl in a short skirt.

When the first teaser was revealed last week, Simtong Entertainment said, "We're going to be different from the cute and sexy girl groups that come out almost once every week with our music and style. You can look forward to them."

The different appearance seems to be working. Without ever having heard GI's music, a Facebook fan page now has well over 2,000 followers. It seems the K-Pop fan universe was ready for something new.

But what exactly can we expect from Global Icon? Just who are these girls and what are they capable of?

GI consists of five members: ARam, AI, Eun Ji, One Ket, and Ha Yun. ARam has been heralded as the most talented singer of the group, although judging by the teasers for the upcoming single, AutoTune seems like it is probably going to be a recurring fixture in GI songs.

One Ket specializes in rapping and choreography. She has even won several dance competitions. Not having to worry about "girlish" appearances means that Global Icon has the ability to provide powerful moves to their tracks, similar to that of their male counterparts.

But that doesn't mean GI is without sex appeal. Sure they all have short hair - now even EunJi, who was previously the only "girly" looking one it the bunch, has chopped off her locks for a bob. Yes they wear dark clothes and probably too much makeup. Maybe there isn't a line of guys wanting to introduce the gals to their grandparents. One might even go as far as to say GI looks like a group of f(x)'s Amber replicas (and is One Ket trying to look like G-Dragon?). But there is a definite element of sex appeal - midriff tops and fierce, independent woman attitudes - it may not be up everyone's alley, but should be commended nonetheless.

As far as the music is concerned, their signature sound has been described as having steady, hip-hop beats with an abstract electronic flair - that should lend well to sensational choreography (so much more than typical girl idol groups who tend to stand in a line and gesture with mainly just the hands) and rapping elements brought in by One Ket and AI.

It is still not entirely clear what the April 3rd single has to do with the Beatles, if anything at all, but the hard bass and change of pace from the usual should win Global Icon some instant fans.
