Two Kids No Longer Feared Dead: Bodies Recovered Early Monday Morning

Two kids from Lincoln County, North Carolina were feared dead after becoming trapped in a construction site wall collapse Sunday night. Rescue workers were searching for the two kids as though they were still alive when the rescue operation began. After a long search the rescue operation turned into a recovery mission. The 6-year-old girl and the 7-year-old boy were feared dead because they had been without oxygen for an extended period of time.

On Monday morning just before the sun came up rescue workers found the bodies of the two kids. The collapse happened around 6pm Sunday night. The father of the two dead kids was in the area and called 911 after learning his children were trapped at the construction site. It is unclear why the two kids were at the construction site alone. The two kids were buried under a wall of dirt. Rescue workers found the two bodies buried 15-feet in the collapsed hole.

Rescue workers had to move cautiously as they attempted to recover the two bodies. There was a fear that the ground was still unstable and would cave in. The rescue workers were able to safely recover the bodies of the two kids.

The Charlotte Observer spoke with witnesses at the scene of the recovery. Dion Burleson is the County Emergency Services public information officer. Burleson told the Charlotte Observer,

"We worked as if they were alive. Times like these are very difficult. It's devastating for the family and each and every responder. This is a tragic night in Denver."

There is an investigation underway into the deaths of the two kids and construction site cave in.
