K-Pop Comeback 'May'hem: Girls Vs. Vocal Groups Vs. Big Solos

Now heading into the middle of May, May-hem in K-pop is a competition among three distinct groups. The first group consists of group artists like 4Men and Vibe that garner a deep fan base with their wide range of vocals. Second are the perennial girl groups in the likes of 4minute, SECRET, T-ARA N4 and Nine Muses. Third are the big-name solo artists such as Psy, Jo Yong Pil and Lee Hyori.

As of May 10, 4Men's "Propose Song" and Vibe's "I Really Want To Meet Her" are holding steady near the top of various music charts. As topnotch vocalist groups, the two teams are battling against the playing field as lone ballad singers.

Perhaps the polar opposite to the serious, melancholic ballads of 4men and Vibe, various girl groups are ranked on music charts with their appeal of cute and funky music and performances. 4minute's "What's Your Name?" and SECRET's "YooHoo" are faring the best among all girl groups. Nine Muses' "Wild" is looking to make a splash as well.

Competing against the groups are the lone stars. Psy, Jo Yong Pil and Lee Hyori are holding their own against the barrage of comebacks of group artists. Psy's "Gentleman," Jo Yong Pil's "Hello" and "Bonce" have been up in the charts for the past month, while Lee Hyori has recently joined the party with her early release of "Miss Korea."
