BTS Jungkook's 'GOLDEN' Reviewed: Does the Album Lack Substance & Cohesiveness?

Jungkook officially released his first English full album "GOLDEN" and the title track "Standing Next to You" on November 3.

With the track's 11 songs, including the main track, the maknae has proven his "golden" status by breaking numerous records and charting across music charts.

BTS is known for being a juggernaut in the K-pop industry, as they are the biggest K-pop group in the world. With several of the members serving in the military, ARMYs are treated anyway to their solo endeavors.

This 2023, Jungkook released his first single "Seven" (feat. Latto), followed by "3D" (feat. Jack Harlow) and "Standing Next to You." With his consecutive hit releases, fans couldn't be prouder of Jungkook, who is now setting his eyes on success as a soloist.

With the buzz "GOLDEN" made in both domestic and international areas, it eventually led to a mega thread on Reddit, which inquired netters' thoughts about Jungkook's new album.

Many netizens expressed how much they loved the album, and some even enumerated their favorite songs from "GOLDEN."

  •  "Jungkook's solo works in K-pop I was really looking forward to hearing."
  •  "Standing Next to You' is exactly the title track I've been waiting for from Jungkook. I liked Seven, 3D not so much, but 'Standing Next to You' is definitely my favorite."
  •  "I liked 'Hate You' and 'Shot Glass of Tears' because I think Jungkook's voice shines when he sings with emotion."

However, a sufficient portion of the discussion pointed out the cohesiveness of the album. Some also called out the lyrical substance and mentioned the short time duration of the songs.

Meanwhile, some defended the album's consistency in its sound. One fan remarked:

"It's a solid album and Jungkook sounds good. Contrary to what people say, it does sound cohesive to me since the genres may be diverse, but they aren't that contrasting. It's all mainstream pop with other influences mixed in."

"I read Jungkook's interview about how he chose to focus on what he's good at, that he didn't write it himself because there was nothing he wanted to write about. I found that refreshing."

Some defended the substance of the songs' lyrics.

"Seeing people saying they didn't like the songs because the 'lyrics are lazy and not deep' on the day Jungkook said "lyrics are just lyrics and don't need to be an autobiography' is so funny."
