Kimberly McCarthy Death Penalty In Texas Is Assumed To Be Coming: Marks The 500th Death Penalty In Texas

Kimberly McCarthy death penalty in Texas could be set as the state prepares to possibly send its 500th individual to the death penalty for a murder committed in 1997.

The 52-year-old Kimberly McCarthy death penalty in Texas will be the first death penalty for a woman in three years and will be a landmark of sorts as the most populated state continues its dominance in the category of death penalties.

Since 1976, when the U.S. Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume, there have been more than 1,300 executions in the U.S., according to CBS News and the Kimberly McCarthy death penalty in Texas adds to the 40% total Texas has claimed.

"The whole world is looking at Texas," Gloria Rubac, with the Texas Death Penalty Abolition Movement in Houston told CBS News.

McCarthy robbed, beat and fatally stabbed retired college psychology professor Dorothy Booth. Booth was attacked in her home outside of Dallas when her finger was chopped off in order for McCarthy to take her wedding ring, according to authorities. She sold the ring and used the money to feed her cocaine addiction.

There were two more murders that were linked to McCarthy, according to authorities.

"The shameful errors that plague Ms. McCarthy's case - race bias, ineffective counsel and courts unwilling to exercise meaningful oversight of the system - reflect problems that are central to the administration of the death penalty as a whole. For this to be the emblem of Texas' 500th execution is something all Texans should be ashamed of," Maurie Levin, the attorney for McCarthy said.

All the appeals of the trial failed to work as the announcement for the execution is set to take place within the week.
