'Elementary' Casts Rhys Ifans As Sherlock Holmes' Brother Mycroft [VIDEO]: How Will He Compare To BBC's Mark Gatiss?

With BBC's "Sherlock" and CBS's "Elementary" both set to premiere this fall, the inevitable comparison continues with CBS reporting that Welsh actor Rhys Ifans will play Sherlock's brother, Mycroft Holmes, in the "Elementary" season premiere.

"I could not be more excited to have Rhys coming aboard," says show creator and executive producer Robert Doherty.

"I've always been a tremendous fan and feel very honoured to have him in the fold. Equally excited are Jonny and Lucy, both of whom have worked with Rhys in feature films. I think this is going to be a lot of fun for all of us."

According to NME, Ifans ("Spider-Man") will join the series as it shoots in London.

An interesting choice, given the already heavy and controversial comparison between "Sherlock" and "Elementary."

In the BBC critically acclaimed adaptation, Mycroft is played by English actor Mark Gatiss, who also happens co-produces the series with "Doctor Who" mastermind Steven Moffat.

For Gatiss' portrayal, he reinforces the idea that "all [Mycroft] wants to do is to bring [Sherlock] into the fold. To stop him being a loose cannon."

"I'd like to find a way of showing more than we actually have that he's actually even cleverer than Sherlock, but the deductions are hard enough as it is!"
