Jon Voight Mastectomy Angelina Jolie: Daughter Operations Learned Online After News Went Public; 'Ray Donovan' Show Huge Hit

Jon Voight didn't know his daughter Angelina Jolie had underwent a double mastectomy until he read about it online.

The 74-year-old actor said his daughter didn't tell him about the operations, even thought he had seen her just two days before she went public with the information in her op-ed, published by The New York Times, The Huffington Post reports.

Despite the shock, Voight said he understands why his daughter didn't inform him of the surgeries, which in total lasted around three months.

"I completely understand. I want the focus to be on the inspiration," he said, adding that they spoke after the news went public.

"My love and admiration for my daughter can't be explained in words," Voight told the New York Daily News about Jolie. "I saw her two days ago with my son Jamie. We all got together for his birthday, with her and Brad [Pitt]. But I didn't know. It wasn't obvious at all. I found out [Tuesday] morning. I was as surprised as anyone and deeply moved by the way she's handled this."

Jolie and Voight have had a rocky relationship, The Huffington Post reports. Voight cheated on Jolie's mother, Marcheline Bertrand, in the 1970s. They later got divorced, and Bertrand raised their children.

In 2001, Voight went on "Access Hollywood" and pleaded for Jolie to seek help for her "serious mental problems," despite their estrangement

Voight and Jolie finally reconciled seven years later, when she was pregnant with twins Knox and Vivienne in 2008.

In other news, Voight is going back to acting and now stars in Showtime's "Ray Donovan," a television series about a South Bostonian working as a Hollywood fixer, who loves his family but despises his father, played by Liev Schreiber, USA Today reports.

Voight plays his father, a terrifying Boston mobster, who gets released from prison and comes to Hollywood, believing Ray set him up for the jail sentence.

"I think it's fun, having these kind of roughneck guys who grew up outside it but are impressed with Hollywood. They're a ragtag bunch and they're in with all the glitz and yet they're both very American products," Voight said about the show. "The idea of glamour has a nice ring to it. It gives an opportunity for a lot of humor and suspense and drama."

The show so far has gotten positive reviews.
