iWatch Apple Release Date 2013: Tech Giant Applies For iWatch Trademark, Announcement Possible In Few Months

The rumored Apple iWatch seems poised to become a reality after the Cupertino tech giant reportedly filed for trademark of the “iWatch” name in Japan, PC Mag reported Monday.

The alleged wearable computer, according to PCMag, may come sooner than everyone expected. Based on Apple history, the company announced the iPad in Jan. 2010, but didn’t get the U.S. trademark rights until March, it was the same month the tablet went on sale.

Bloomberg reported that the trademark application for the iWatch was filed on June 3 through the Japan Patent Office, a few weeks after Apple also for the same iWatch trademark in Russia.

Recent reports show that the company maybe planning to release the iWatch device late 2013, with some rumors saying that an early 2014 as the more realistic timeframe.

If in case the usual Apple pattern between trademarking a name and releasing a product applies, the iWatch maybe announced to consumer sooner than expected this year. It’s possible that the wearable device could be announced earlier than the highly anticipated iPhone 5s and iPhone 6.

The latest trademark filings, however, is not a guarantee of the wearable device’s release. PCMag noted that it could merely be Apple’s bid to secure the rights to the name to prevent brand confusion in various markets.

In a recent interview with All Things Digital, Apple CEO Tim Cook, was artfully reserved when asked consistently about the possibility of wearable Apple computer.

"There's nothing that's gonna convince a kid who has never worn glasses, or a band, or a watch, or whatever, to wear one. Or at least I haven't seen it. So I think there's lots of things to solve in this space,” Tim Cook said, while wearing a Nike Fuel bracelet, which is a regular piece in his day-to-day apparel.

“But, it's an area that's ripe for exploration, it's ripe for us all getting exciting about."

He added in the same interview that Apple “has several more game changers in us.”
