Legend Of Korra Accused Of Racist Skin Color Misrepresentation: Bryan Konietzko Fires Back On Diversity Issue With Tumblr

Much like M. Night Shyamalan with "The Last Airbender," "The Legend of Korra" has come under accusations of ethnic misrepresentation due to skin color mismatch between Katara and Aang's children, and Bryan Konietzko is not letting this one slide.

As shown on his Tumblr, the accuser claims that "none of Katara and Aang's kid[s] share Katara's complexion," in response to a photo posted earlier showing Katara's children Kya, Tenzin, and Bumi.

Co-creator Konietzko responded with a carefully illustrated and written response.

"I prefer to stay out of this type of discourse on Tumblr and let the large body of work Mike [DiMartino] and I have put out there over the years speak for itself (which obviously DOES NOT include the gross misinterpretations and misrepresentations of our work in this guy's work)," writes Konietzko.

"The claim that 'none of Katara and Aang's kids share Katara's complexion' is unequivocally false. Kya's color model shares the exact same skin color as Katara's; Tenzin's skin is a touch darker and less saturated than Aang's; and Bumi's is just about in the middle of his siblings'."

It is no surprise Konietzko takes offense to the claim, as he has come under indirect fire due to "The Last Airbender," the critically and commercially panned movie adaptation which used an Caucasian actors for non-white characters.

"Depicting diverse characters is an issue that is very important to me. But as an art director, depicting a variety of lighting situations, light temperatures, colored light sources, color atmospheres, contrast levels, dynamic ranges, tinted filters, tones, styles, moods, exposure settings, diffusion levels, etc., is all very important to me too," he continues.

"I urge you to consider any number of the factors listed and described above before you jump to false conclusions, get your feelings hurt, or lash out with self-righteous condemnation based on a variable rather than a constant."

Konietzko is set to appear at San Diego Comic-Con, where hopefully fans will get a release date of season 2 of "Legend of Korra."
