Kate Middleton Pregnant, Baby Has No Name As Due Date Approaches But Royal Title Announced: First Prince Or Princess Of Cambridge, And Heir To British Throne

Kate Middleton is pregnant with Prince William's royal baby and the July 13 due date is this weekend. The baby's gender and name are unknown, but its official title was announced: His or Her Royal Highness the Prince or Princess of Cambridge.

Kate and William are officially the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, so the title makes sense. The pair was given these titles by the Queen on their wedding day in April 2011.

The royal baby will be the first ever Prince or Princess of Cambridge.

The mayor of Cambridge, Paul Sandars, told The Daily Mail that the royal baby's title is "a great honour" to the historical university town, which is located about 50 miles north of London, E! News reports.

"I think it's lovely to continue the close link with the royal family," he said. "I think anything which helps to keep Cambridge in the public eye is a good thing as we rely on tourism."

Any further children the royal couple has together will also bear this title.

Cambridge's former mayor Sheila Stewart said that in the past, there have been "some dukes of Cambridge, but never a prince or princess."

The child of Kate and William will be the future king or queen of England.

In October 2011, the rules of royal succession were changed so that Prince William's firstborn son or daughter is eligible to become the future heir to the throne.

"Put simply, if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were to have a little girl, that girl would one day be our queen," British Prime Minister David Cameron explained.

Though an official title has been confirmed for the child, no ideas for names have been released to the public.

"The couple have yet to decide on a name and probably won't until the day of the birth," a palace aide told Us Weekly.
