Lollapalooza 2013 Lineup: Lana Del Rey, NIN, The Killers and New Order Brave the Rain to Kick It Off (Video)

Lollapalooza 2013 kicked off in Chicago on Friday. Lollapalooza’s 2013 lineup Lana Del Ray, Nine Inch Nails, The Killers, Chance The Rapper, Father John Misty, Jessie Ware Brave, New Order and a host of other musicians hit the stage in front of a crowd that could fill two football fields of music fans at Perry’s Stage. Lollapalooza 2013 opened at Grant Park at 11 a.m. in the rain, while the crew spread mulch so the show wouldn’t be a muddy mess.

Lollapalooza 2013’s lineup was an eclectic mix of some of the biggest bands old and new. Friday’s Lollapalooza lineup threw a dance party amid the corporate sponsorship, product placement and half-nude dancers.

Lana del Rey hypnotized the Lollapalooza 2013 crowd at Grant Park with a mesmerizing set featuring songs from her debut album "Born to Die" and EP "Paradise" and "The Great Gatsby." soundtrack.

Lollapalooza 2013’s lineup on the north side closed with Nine Inch Nails’ 90s industrial angst with synth beat and wailing guitars. Trent Reznor’s workouts paid off as the band hit their high points, three songs from their upcoming album “Hesitation Marks” and “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” soundtrack collaboration with Atticus Ross, “What if We Could.” Resnor said he based the set on the Talking Heads’ 1983 tour, mixing tech with visual, even if they did turn off the jumbo-tron screens. The Talking Heads tour of 1983 was captured by Jonathan Demme in the concert film “Stop Making Sense.” The wailed through "Came Back Haunted," "Closer" and ended with "Hurt."

The Killers poured glitter and raunch to the Lollapalooza stage. Icona Pop hit four-on-the floor beats with post-dub dance and Crystal Castles screamed through their sets. New Order romped through a greatest hits package of techno at Lollapalooza Red Bull Stage "Ceremony" and "Blue Monday." The set peaked with “Temptation” and leveled into Joy Division tunes.

Chicago band, Smith Westerns brightened the clouds with bright guitar and indie pop melodies on the Red Bull Stage. They were followed on the Lakeshore Stage by Josh Tillman, better known as Father John Misty, who rocked with a unicorn on country folk tunes like "I'm Writing A Novel," "I Love You, Honey Bear" and "Only Son Of The Ladiesman." Tillman didn’t mind getting a little wet saying, "I heard a girl here say `I hate the rain.’ Rain makes civilization possible. Civilization enables groupthink -- and groupthink makes it possible for shitty music to be huge...so I love the rain!" Tillman didn’t love the "Platinum" VIP pass, which cost about $3,600 for the weekend Saying "If you bought a Platinum Pass, that entitles you to a song sung directly to you. You also get to shake hands with Imagine Dragons, and dry-hump Lana Del Ray. I'm really looking forward to you eating sushi of me later."

Chicago's Chance the Rapper played the smallest stage at the festival, BMI, for 40 minute set that mixed his songs "Pusha Man," "Acid Rain" and "Everybody's Someone” with hip hop hits from the 90s before he was Twista and Vic Mensa on "Cocoa Butter Kisses." Hot Chip hit Perry's Stage with "Ready For The Floor."

British R&B singer-songwriter Jessie Ware played the same set at Lollapalooza 2013 that she did at her headlining a sold-out show at Lincoln Hall on Friday night. The played her debut album “Devotion” almost in its entirety highlighted by "If You're Never Gonna Move," "Wildest Moments" and the set-ending "Running."
